R.I.P. Larry Krueger.

"Kruger," actually, though, to his vexation, commonly misspelled "Krueger."

NICE, NICE guy.
Look up "affable" in the dictionary, and you'll see his picture.
'Met Larry when I was in college, working at WHYN/Springfield.
Larry came in from WEMJ/Laconia, took-over mornings shortly thereafter.
For a while, he was moonlighting on The Famous 1510 WMEX.
I drove to Boston to hear him, and he sounded big there.
He got to Pro a year ahead of me, him in '73, me in '74.
When sportscaster/Salty sidekick Mike Gorman left for TV12, PD Jay Clark moved Larry to mornings.
One night, Jimmy Gray hotlined me to tell me that Larry's wife Karon had just died in a traffic crash.
LISTENERS lined up at her funeral to hug Larry.
The 70s became the 80s, the 80s became the 90s, and it seemed like Salty's last name was "...and Larry."
NICE, NICE guy.
See and hear him & Salty in their heyday, in this Channel 10 Evening Magazine piece I had on VHS:

Larry was always one of the Good Guys....Consider him a pal and friend for over 30 years. We shared some great times, and a few tough times. He will be missed. RIP old buddy.

I'm sorry to say I missed the HOF dinner this year as it is a good time to catch up with aquaintances. Each and every year Larry & I ended up talking for 10-15 minutesgoing over stuff on who was in touch with who, how they were doing, etc. Even though I mainly worked the FM side, I did have some fill in duites behind the scenes in the AM production room and during Snowball and always was met with a smile from Larry. Gonna miss him!

A real gentleman, always had a nice word to say...about everybody. I will miss him, as I know many will.

I got to work with Larry @ Metro in 2005. He was a nice guy & I am happy I got to hear some of his "war stories" as well as his autograph on a circa-1990 "63WPRO" bumper sticker and he even gave me a photocopy of a 1972 WMEX music sheet listing him as either a weekender of a fill-in.

When I considered a career in radio as a high school student in the 70's, I often called Larry on the WPRO request line (before he went to mornings). He always took the time to talk radio with me and was always encouraging. I'm extremely lucky not only to have listened to him as a kid but also to have had the pleasure of working with him years later. He really was an outstanding person - there aren't many out there like Larry.

I never had the opportunity to work with Larry, but was fortunate to meet him on a couple of occasions. An awfully nice guy and a Rhode Island broadcasting icon. Godspeed, sir.

If this isn't an oxymoron, it was "a warm, warm 'Big Chill.'"

It'll take some time to emotionally process Larry's funeral, but...wow.
HE WOULD'VE LOVED IT.

What made this guy special is what made this radio station special...PEOPLE.
There were PEOPLE there that Larry and I worked with in Springfield.
There were PEOPLE that Larry and I worked with at WPRO in the early 70s.
And seeing them...it was like it was yesterday.
HE WOULD'VE LOVED IT.

Also there to say goodbye were PEOPLE who had never met Larry...but KNEW him.
Listeners.
Wow.

OK, OK...we-who-do-this-for-a-living think radio is big.
But -- forgive me -- "it's only radio," a-buzz-coming-out-the-clock-radio-and-dashboard.
Like the muted trombone when the grown-ups talk in "Charlie Brown Christmas."
UNTIL...something-that-sounds...different...pops-out-the-speaker.
That what Larry helped Salty do...every...single...morning.

I sat with surviving fellow Pro Personalities Jimmy Gray and Gary DeGraide.
No, NOT Mount Rushmore. "It's only radio."
But to have spend such Quality Time as I did back then with these PEOPLE?
Wow.

I was there. Couldn't have said it better myself, so I won't try.

Goodbye Larry! Salty, Bud & Larry together again.
