Mike was the first p.d at WYNU in Jackson....great guy.

WYATT, L. MICHAEL - age 51 of Knoxville, formerly of Crossville, passed away at his home on October 17, 2009. [EDIT]

[EDIT-quotation exceeds fair use standards.]

What did he die of? Gee, he's only 5 years old than me. Everyone on this board, pray for him and his family! I didn't know him, but I have heard his name before.

He worked at WLUY Lucky 13 in Nashville in the early 80's. Then on to Jackson Tn then back to Knoxville. Not sure how he died.

WLUY was my first radio job. 1982. Not sure when the calls first were used and for how long.Romer might be able to shed some light on it. It was the sister station to the early Y-107...

WLUY was a nightmare: when Mooney sold WMAK-FM (92.1) to Sam Howard, they bought
WUSW 107.3 in Lebanon and launched the first version of WYHY/Y-107 (this is the only station I ever
got to pick calls for). WLUY was Jerry Adam's baby...he wanted a full service lifestyle station to
cater to "the housewife crowd". Let's just say it was a bad idea. In the final days of WLUY, weekends were
staffed entirely by Broadcast School students who often failed to show up. With a few exceptions,
the talent was atrocious at best. I was let go for budgetary reasons...and moved to "The New 106 FM".
WLUY eventually began turning off the transmitter at 7p...then went dark before the sale to Rev Babb.
Back on topic - Mike gave WLUY his best effort...stayed positive despite the obvious folly of it all.
All attention in the building was on 107...WLUY was doomed to reading tips from Heloise on-air, and
playing radio bingo. Worst radio experience I've ever been involved with (or even seen from a distance).
A few more years of therapy and I may be able to tell you more...

So let's see here...

WMAK was disco in the late '70s ("Majik 13" or something like that), then they went oldies on January 1, 1980, from what I understand (good move, considering that disco was dying!), then became WNQM around 1983, as best as I can tell. So that left them with about 15 minutes in 1982 for this (un!)"Lucky 13" experiment.

By the way, if broadcasting students don't show up, no radio career for them!

At one point Mike did a sports morning show on Lucky 13...heavy NASSCAR talk....Joe Williams might have been the co-host...

??? It is amazing that a sweet tribute to a great guy can morph into a narcisstic rant about one person's career mistakes. romer979 should be ashamed of himself for assaulting the rest of \\us with his crabby rant about a radio job he did not like. Does anyone care?

On behalf of the sane, mature adults on this board, I would like to apologize to Mike's family and friends.
Now that romer 979 has proven that anyone who hires him is taking a great risk, perhaps he will leave us
alone.

Nice tribute to a nice guy, I'm sure. I never knew him.
However, the last post on this (before your recent one) was about a year ago.
Thus, no more people (like maybe his close friends or family) would have had to been reminded of it (or even seen it for the first time) if you hadn't re-posted on it a year later.
No offense to you...maybe he was your friend and it really ticked you off to see this again.

where did I say anything negative about Mike?
the station sucked...and he rose above it.

please read it again. sorry to have offended you with something I did not say. wow.

I knew Mike well. In fact I worked with him in Nashville and again in Jackson Tn. He knew WLUY was bad and we talked about it many times! "Romer979" worked with us as well so he knows first hand how bad it was. Truth hurts I guess. And yes he DID rise above it. We all did!
