R.I.P. Paul Harvey

ABC Radio news commentator Paul Harvey has died:

http://abcnews.go.com/?paulharvey

It's a sad day.

Paul Harvey was heard on most ABC Information affiliated station in Puget Sound and all over the Northwest. Including a few unlikely ones (I remember hearing Paul Harvey on CHR formatted KZFN in Moscow, ID!)

....and now you know the end of the story.......

What amazes me is that the story broke around 4:30-5p today and most news outlets still not carrying as of 7p. NBC did a Los Angeles break-in to national to mention it; but local didn't seem to carry it (probably because all the weekend news producers are 19 and have no idea who the hell "that guy" is).

Had a great convo with him during an NAB convention a few years back. That, and a similar convo with Dick Clark (long before suffering the stroke) were probably the ONLY good things that ever came out of all the $$ I invested in the NAB conventions.

Wonder how many of the folks on this board will still be on air at age 90??? (Bryan Johnson doesn't count).

When I was a kid I liked to mimic him saying, "This is Paul Harvey, stand by for NEWS!" I remember listening to him the week Nixon resigned. A real legend, he will be missed.

You got that right! Paul Harvey will be sorely missed! Enjoy your rest Paul and take "Angel" for a nice long walk and have a great reunion you've both earned it. Good..............Day!

Not sure how old he was, but Bill O'Mara was something like that before he was dismissed from KLKI 1340. He was (and always will be) the Voice Of Sports in the Puget Sound.....

Even then, he did it with more style and panache than today's sportscasters could ever imagine.........

Am with you, BW.

In the early 90's, I got bagged from KJR...and PD said "I really think you represent more of the OLD KJR". I chose to take that as a compliment given what the station was becoming at that point.

It's amazing how quick our culture is to dismiss the concept of age and wisdom vs. the way it is respected more in the Eastern lands of Asia and India; or even in tribes of Africa.

We tend to hold a particular lasting memory or moment of someone when they pass. For me, the most prominent Harvey moment is being at a diner restaurant around noon one day. It had a fair amount of commotion and conversation. Paul Harvey came on air, and all the clutter and commotion stopped because everyone in the place had a habit of listening every day. The Harvey broadcast ends and the commotion starts up instantly.

ABC News affiliates had the story on the air at 6pm. And every 30 minutes since last night, including today. Some really wonderful audio clips. While his son PH Jr is sounding more and more like his father, he is not his father. Paul Harvey was one-of-a-kind. I've listened to him since I was a teenager, and I'm 63. We've had the pleasure of carrying him on KBKW for many years.

His unique style of delivery will be missed greatly.

As a sales guy, I always got a kick out of how PH would go seamlessly into a live commercial without you even realizing it until he said the product's name. Talk about a dying art...most so-called "live read" spots now are pre-recorded.

a legend is gone :'(
Was a storyteller before storytellin on radio was the norm
Mastered the art of the live spot before seemless life spots were the norm
Reinvented himself time and again.

He joins his Angel and walks with angels :)

Anyone have more information about the controversy involving Paul Harvey and the folks in Shelton? I caught the very tail end of a King 5 segment on the 5 O'clock news and it had to do with KMAS-AM and the city counsil voting on wheter or not to raise the flag at half-mast. I checked the KMAS web-site and KING 5's but souldn't find anymore info. Like I said...I caught the VERY tail end of the segment and saw that King 5 interviewed KMAS G.M. Dale Hubbard. I got the feeling that this is something KMAS wanted...and the city council did not.
