R.I.P. Polly Bergen, 84

Singer-actress-cosmetics entrepreneur Polly Bergen died Saturday at age 84. I think this has been posted on another site, but I'm putting it here in case anyone missed it. Her two best-known roles are connected with Robert Mitchum: in the 1962 version of "Cape Fear" she played Gregory Peck's wife; the family was being stalked by Max Cady (Mitchum, the same part played by Robert De Niro in the remake), and then she played Mitchum's wife in "The Winds Of War." I first remember her when she was one of the original panelists on "To Tell The Truth" in the late '50s; she had a variety show on NBC in the 1957-58 season and was on "Desperate Housewives."

She changed the spelling of her last name from Burgin; her father, Bill Burgin, was, I think (somebody correct me), a music teacher in Knoxville. So no, she's not related to Candice Bergen or Edgar Bergen (Candice's dad).

While never a big star, she was an enjoyable presence. God rest her.

She was great on To Tell The Truth, younger and goofier than the other panalists such as Ralph Bellamy and Kitty Carlisle. She often admitted she was just guessing at the answer. She often didn't have anything written down when host Bud Collyer called on her. But I think the producers liked her ingenue personna. GSN had been running To Tell The Truth at 2 am some years ago, so I recorded it and got to watch it again, now that I'm older.
