R.I.P. Pumpkin the cat (My Cat)

We had to have our cat Pumpkin put down this morning. Over the past year or so she had been having issues with her kidneys and thyroid. She also had a heart murmur. She started acting strange late last night so this morning we took her to the vet. They told us there wasn't anything they could do to help her this time. She has been a part of The Bramhall family since March 2004. My parents were going through a rough patch in their marriage and separated in 2003. My dad was getting lonely so he adopted Pumpkin the Cat from The Meriden Humane Society when they had an adoption event at Petco in March 2004. In 2006 my parents got back together and Dad and Pumpkin moved in with Mom and me. In November 2010 my dad passed away and Pumpkin became my Mom's full responsibility.

I didn't have any pets growing up so this whole losing a pet thing is a new experience for me at age 33. It's like other things in my life - experiencing them later than most people.

You have my sympathy.
I had to euthanize two cats last year. They had been part of the Berry household for nearly 18 years.
It was (and still is) heartbreaking.

Dogs have owners, but cats have staff. She was probably about 2 or 3 when your dad got her, so she lived a good long life as tortoise shell calicos tend to do, which reflects very well on her owners...er...staff, including you.

Two months ago we had to put down our 18-year old Boxer mix. He had not had a sick day in his life and was the most gentle big dog we ever had. He came to us as a stray and had a good, long comfortable life and I guess that is all the consolation there is for outliving a loved one.
 
My 12 year old daughter is a cat lover and we lost 2 in the past year, which broke her heart, so you have my sympathy as well.

Losing a cat or a dog is a painful experience as they become part of the family. So sorry for your and your family's loss. Pumpkin was a beautiful cat; RIP Pumpkin........ Rest assured she had a good life with your family.

I have to wonder now if there is some kind of defect with Tortoise shell cats. Last night at work when I showed a picture of Pumpkin to Gavin he told me that he had a Tortoise shell cat when he was younger and she too had thyroid issues.

P.S. I forgot to mention in my original post that in addition to her thyroid and kidney issues, the vet thought Pumpkin had also suffered a stroke. He thinks that's what caused her strange behavior Thursday night that led my Mom to bring Pumpkin to the vet Friday morning.
 
Hyperactive thyroid is common in old cats, Marc. Stop beating yourself up. When you coworker was younger his cat was older. She was an old cat. Your cat was an old cat. The hyperactive thyroid probably masked all kinds of cat old age troubles. Doesn't matter what kind of a cat.
