R.I.P. TVLAND

I'm officially calling TVLAND dead. This summer they're adding a bunch of new original crap including a realtiy show with George Foreman and a new show with Cindy Williams and Penny Marshall. In addition they've picked up SCRUBS and JUST SHOOT ME FOR 2008.

http://www.sitcomsonline.com/blog/2007/03/tv-land-upfront-2007-original-series.html

Now would be the time for ION to dump the infomercials and go 24/7 or maybe for BELO to try and syndicate ME-TV (Channel 23 Chicago).

On the surface it would make sense but to ION, they make more money with a 1 hour of infomercials compared with 5 hours of classic TV Shows with standard commercials.

Um, Belo has nothing to do with ME-TV.

I just wish they'd stop airing all the westerns especially on weekends.

What is interesting here is that when cable networks substantially change their programming niche I believe that MSOs and others can drop them. There was a tug of war between TIme Warner systems and American Movie Classics when they substantially changed the programming on AMC several years ago. I don't know what was the outcome of that situation.

I knew there was something strange going on with Tv Land. I hate that comedy show, and your'e right on the westerns. There was so much more to tv than Bonanza. Although a great show, its still overkill, with Gunsmoke and Bonanza. I miss the original programming on this network.

Ugh...Scrubs is already on 5 channels and Just Shoot Me? Kind of funny, but not a classic.
:-\

My guess is that with the new show with Cindy Williams and Penny Marshall is that Laverne and Shirley is going to become a motion picture and they are trying to pick actresses to play them in the movie version. Only wonders who will play Lenny and Squiggy in that one.

As for Just Shoot Me and Scrubs, they are not CLASSIC shows, besides that Scrubs still airs on NBC with new episodes as well in reruns in syndication, also Just Shoot Me ended its run 4 years ago, so beats me what TV Land is trying to pull there.

Be glad I don't have that channel.

yes tvland has be going down hill very fast over the last year or to.where is alf at?where is familey matters at?where is charles in charege at?there is great stuff out there that are classic.and all that westerns crap they show on the weekends needs to go.I just found the ION about 2 weeks ago.it must be a new ch.and they have great stuff on that .next week they are going to start showing Alice.

If you want Family Matters, Full House, Boy Meets
World, Step By Step, etc., you have to go to ABC
Family, where it seems like TGIF all day (daytime)
every day.

While I admit that Scrubs can't yet be considered
a classic, and I didn't know Mad About You was
ever considered one, the fact is that the audience
TV Land is after wants those shows, not Leave It
To Beaver or other things we boomers grew up on.
I've said once before that I get tired of seeing either
Gunsmoke or Bonanza every time I turn on TV Land.
I'm almost to the point where I wouldn't care if
DirecTV did something else with Channel 301.

In the classic TV forum there's a thread about the Retro Television Network (RTN) possibly expanding. I saw them on a trip to St. Louis last year, and I would love to have it in my area. It appears that ION isn't making any effort to become real competition for Nick at Nite/TV Land other than in prime time (and not much at that), so I'd love to see RTN take off and be a real competitor against both of them.

RTN is availible on satellite and you can get it at no charge (other than getting a system togather), there are several channels broadcasting on satellite that show classic tv, Just a thought if you wanted to go that route. you can find out more info by googlinf FTA (free to air).

No no no, I hate reality shows! Well I gues thats a channel I'll be deleting for my favorite lists.

I am glad to see others feel the way I do. I thought it was just me. I wrote TV LAND a month or two ago and asked them if they got their new program director from a mental hospital. Who in their right mind would run a station like this. Back years ago, TV LAND was the best around. A good variety of classics, and a good rotation that you did not get bored with.

One thing I always enjoyed was their "Crimestoppers". Blocks of crime dramas like The Rookies, S W A T, Charlies Angels, etc. Miss that a lot.

So now, I watch Sanford & Son nightly and know every few nights I will see the same episode again and again. YIPPEE ::) ::) ::)

And you are right, Bonanza and Gunsmoke have been beaten beyond. One or two times a day would be ok.

Dear Lord who would ever want to watch any of those shows anyways? ::) ;D

Whatever ION puts on in prime time is basically a loss leader. They make their money from the infomercials and religious programming they run the other 19 hours of the day.

I agree that TVland was a great channel, back when they use to show diffrent shows all day, now I hardly tune to it any more. Its just not what it use to be. Maybe someone will launch a new channel and play the classics again.

Nor does Belo have anything to do with ION for that matter. The closest Belo comes to either is KTVK 3 in Phoneix, which is just a plain ol' indie. It's sister station on Channel 61 is the local CW affiliate.

Cheers :D

Since when did so-called "Reality" TV become cheaper to produce and air than classic gems from the 1960s?

Ohh wait....I think I get it now. By getting some show from the 1960s, that means THEY ACTUALLY HAVE TO $PEND $$$MONEY$$$!!!. How silly of me to not realize this. ::)

Cheers :D
