Spanish language site Radionotas.com reports the death yesterday of Raúl Alarcón, Sr., founder of SBS.

Mr. Alarcón owned a number of stations in Cuba prior to being exiled by the Castro government and went on to buy New York's suburban 620 which he made into WSKQ forming the base for SBS.

Has been for last 10 to 15 years. Raul senior was given the stations in the keys as a sort of retirement occupation. When SBS took them back last year to do La Raza, we all knew he was no longer able to run them.

I take it "La Raza" programs reg. Mexican music? The name just sounds appropriate for that music.

WRAZ was WZMQ and the other station is WMFM. FOr 2007, they were networked with WRMA, and prior to that Raúl Sr. was running them. He had owned them since 1999 when he bought them from SBS.

He ran them as La Gran Cadena and sort of an AC format like he did years ago on FM 98 in LA.

Yeah, Raza is regional, with the Chulo show from Chicago in the morning, La Bronca from LA in mid-days, El Mandril in afternoons and something else syndicated in evenings. It is nearly all network content from other SBS regionals.
