Rachel Maddow subbing for Al Franken

D

doc9464

Guest
I think she has done a very good job this week. I think she needs to modulate her opinion a bit only because she is a strong debater. Her views are easily modulated but listening helps draw in the guest and the callers benefit from a spirited debate surrounded by good solid facts. I enjoyed hearing Kent Jones at this time. I was hoping she would let Kent do Lawton Smalls.

Her visit with Paul Ryckoff and Tom Oliphant were examples of good quality fact based interviewing. When she disagreed she did a good job of making her point but I think she should modulate a bit more because Ryckoff and Oliphant are very good at sharing their outlook on issues. Good, but could have been stellar with less on her end.

She has been strong on the New Orleans diaster news and she did have callers on a regular basis. Callers had some good questions and she has been hitting hard on the news and facts. I give her a solid B+ for this week filling in.

Attention Franken: listen carefully, calls are a good thing to do even if you don't do them all the time.

Attention Lampher: You should try to sub with Rachel or sub alone because you are a good host who deserves more air time. Remember when you did your subbing with Joe Conason...that was a very good job...maybe try it with Rachel next time Al has to go.....

B+? No way, she was just about perfect. I heard all three hours yesterday and was in love. It was definitely a solid A. Attention Fanken- Who needs you any more...? Thanks for getting AAR off the ground with name recognition, now just show up every other week or so on the different AAR/libtalk shows as a guest and everything will be fine.

I should have listened to unfiltered more when it was on the air- I couldn't get past Lizz and Chuck D though. Rachel could handle a full 3 or 4 hour set all by herself no problem. Move Springer to the weekends or something, please!

Each of the liberal talkers I listened to yesterday- Malloy, Seder, Rhodes, Steph Miller, and Maddow (For Franken) were at the top of their game yesterday. Maddow stood out along with Miller. This is the moment progressive talk has been waiting for, the rip into the Bush Admin was bloody. I have never heard such good liberal talk in my life- this is the AAR the left wanted March 2004. Finally looks like they are getting there.

An Opportunity For Stations

AAR seems to have a good deal of "best of" shows and fill in hosts. Wish I got as much time off as AAR's on-air people.

Instead of taking AAR re-runs or subs, maybe stations could try out new/other programming in these slots. There is a good deal of progressive talk talent entering syndication. When Randi Rhodes was out for an operation last winter, Clear Channel stations took the opportunity to offer a sneak preview of Jerry Springer (instead of taking the shows with subs). When Franken is out, it's an opportunity for stations to try out Thom Hartmann. When Springer is out, it's an opportunity to give some exposure to Stephanie Miller. Randi airs on delay on most stations, so Randi taking time off might be an opportunity to try out Phil Hendrie. And when Morning Sedation is into re-runs or subs, maybe see what Bill Press can do.

It seems like it would be to the advantage of the companies syndicating these "other" progressive talk shows to allow the occasional fill in. At least, it would "encourage" AAR's people to come to work more. And somebody different might create some buzz for local progressive talk outlets.

Call her what you want...she's on target and hitting them pretty well in deep center or over the fence this week....

Rob, I think you have some super valid points...this may be the point where liberals on the radio can truly make a difference. This situation has given each host the ability to lay out a very accurate case against the "smiles" and "we are doing fine" delivery of the Bush administration employees...

When Bush said he didn't think anyone anticipated the levee disasters..all the host laid out solid easily provable info that that was a huge lie....they continued to lay this case for failure out....while encouraging others to keep giving ....compassion and truth was delivered in a fine fashion. I hope they will push this as hard and as compassionately as possible.

Rachel Maddow is playing a "Mr. Bill" leveee wetlands PSA that proves this administration has got it head in the sand or at least in some lobbyist's or fundamentalist's rear end.

You want more comedy during this horrific week? I give Rachel an A+.

Joe Conason is practically catatonic...

Not much of a compliment considering that Joe Conason is practically catatonic...<P ID="signature">______________
