racial slur weei/wbz

Yesterday WEEI Chrs Curtis used a racial slur against Japanese people on the Greg Hill morning show . Last month Tony Maz had some racial issues on 98.5 the sports hub . It would be nice if these two sports stations would just stick with sports .

Chris Curtis apologized, said he spoke the wrong name by mistake during the bit, and he's been suspended without pay for a week. Tony Maz was also suspended without pay for some days, and Beasley employees had to attend sensitivity training after Maz's comment.

That doesn't excuse them by any means, but considering that both these guys were suspended, it does show that their employers take these situations seriously and have taken disciplinary action against them. Whether or not the actions taken by the station owners and management was too much or too little, etc. is I'm sure another debate altogether.

Looks like Audacy employees will be forced to undergo sensitivity training! There's so many sad things about "free speech" being sacrificed for the sake of political correctness and inclusion.

Does the First Amendment really need to be explained to you in 2023? This very forum had a reminder about that two decades ago.

I guess I better stop watching those McHale's Navy and Black Sheep Squadron re-reuns on MeTV

Stop watching those DVR'd episodes of Nip Tuck too I guess.

It sure was nippy out there this morning huh

Anyone fly All Nippon Airways?

I think there is a chink in my armour!

The Master Cylinder is leaking, and I can't break the bleeder screw on the slave cylinder.

someone nipped my wallet, but I sent my dog after the guy and my dog nipped at his ankles

Whoopi got nailed for using a term that was slang for people who were nomadic/itinerant recently

Gypsy Rose Lee was a famous burlesque entertainer

Has anyone seen my Sweet Gypsy Rose?

but speaking of 50ML bottles of alcoholic beverages, I had one on the underside of my tool box lid held on by a dab of silicone, with a post-it note under it that said " in case of emergency, break seal and consume contents". The head of HR came wandering thru one day and saw it and was not amused..... they also found the topless Hawaiian Woman calendar a woman I was going to school with at night gave me as a joke birthday present.... it was hanging behind the door in my office....

Come on! He wasn't saying Nippon. Nippon is the name of Japan, in Japanese. And even referencing Mila Kunis (sp?), his wording is tough to defend. He named Mina Kimes as his favorite...not that she had his favorite (nipples). So if he meant Mila Kunis, which when has she ever been topless to even see her nipples; he would have said "Mina Kimes (mistakenly) has my favorite nips (referencing nipples), not "is my favorite...". Even then, he would have been in hot water for that, for being sexist (whether I agree with that or not is irrelevant).

Then for you to use McHale's Navy as a reference point. It's a show that's been off the air for more than 60 years. "I don't know about you, but when I think how to talk of race in 2023, I ask what would Ernest Borgnine have said in 1962 (wait wait, it was on until 1966; let's give credit where it's due)." Going to the 1960s as defense of using a racist term in 2023 is equally illogical as buying your new car at a junkyard.

I'm not even going to go down the rabbit hole of words in English having multiple meanings. On the surface, it's hilarious to have these discussions. I can come on this board and talk about Dick Sweat. I remember asking my mother about Dick Sweat all the time. I'm one more time going to say Dick Sweat to prove my point, because Dick Sweat was the name of a local politician in the 90s. However, I can't talk about how I came home from the gym, specifically discussing (ending it there). Now let's use a word that in a specific context was created in the era of World War II, to put down Japanese people. In fact, going full circle, wasn't McHale's Navy set in World War II, in the Pacific? Then you tell me that's the same contextual understanding as a common term used for plastic surgery, which is also the name of an old TV show. It isn't, thus your line of reasoning is illogical.

Calling some a Gypsy, or them referring to themselves as one isn't a negative intention. It's when you shorten the word and use it in a manner to reference thievery or a person one can't trust, that it gets its cliche bigoted tone. Again, fun with words. Let's ignore context and speak from a vacuum of absolutism? I disagree.

And what does Whoopi's statement have to do with what this guy said on the radio. They're not connected events, just that people like to take two independent events and make superficial connections, just to defend one of the events. It's the 2020s "fun with the clique starter kit," as I call it. As for me, I'm not going to fain being offended or feel like it was an attack on me. For me it's about finding the logical conclusion. To me, he was a buffoon aiming to sound quick witted, which exposed a bit of his personality. His line of defense was equally as dumb as the original statement. I just disagree with the illogical defense that you used in your post. If you want to defend the guy, that's on you. But don't parrot the others across social media in the camp of your choosing. I've heard McHale's Navy brought up so many times, I irrationally want to dig up Ernest Borgnine, and throw him at Tom Arnold.

NBC news showed a very large young man 6'6,260 beating a woman in unconsciousness in a school hallway a few months ago.
Trust me anyone who saw it was going to think more about race, than information about a quip about race on radio.

McHale's navy is on every weekday at 1200 and 1230 on MeTV

I understand that, just that because one hears it in rerun from a 1960s TV show doesn't make it right to say in such context, now. We also have other pieces of arts and entertainment from decades past, who use other racial slurs. Still doesn't make it right to say, now.

Imagine Mel Brooks trying to release Blazing Saddles (1974) or History of the World (1982) today? "History of the World Part II" appears on Hulu this month and it was written and produced by Brooks and a few others, but I'm guessing it's VERY tame in comparison to some of his original stuff from decades ago and I'm quite sure you won't hear racial epithets and ethnic slang. While I personally find some of Brooks' original stuff to be brilliant and hilariously funny, I'm also fully aware that it was written and released during a much different time.

Agreed. For me, it all comes down to context. With Brooks, it's mostly used as a means to put down the bigot character. Same with a film like Django Unchained. With Curtis, it was a poor attempt at a quick witted reply, to throw the listener off guard. It basically spat in the face of Kimes, to make him feel intelligent and funny. His face when looking for approval made him look like punk middle school kid who thought he was cool, because he flipped the middle finger in the overhead projector. He wanted to feel "cool." As I posted yesterday, had he said "Mina Kimes has my favorite nips," I would buy the "nipple defense." He blurted out her name, while Hill and the other hosts were saying what are your favorite nips, and speed rounding different brands of whiskey nips.

Hogan's Heroes runs 2X a night and "Kraut" is freely used.
Do you need help towing your car back onto the road? You seem stuck in the mud now. In other words, what does this have to do with Curtis naming a woman of Asian decent as his "favorite (slur)," in a radio show that was discussing Dr. McGuillicuddy's, Fireball, and Jack Daniels as some for their favorite nips to drink?
