Racists Perpetuate Racism - Imus

I’ve been in broadcasting since 1973. I’ve been in major markets most of my career as an air talent, music director, production director and program director. Now I am a (dreaded) “consultant”. My blood pressure has hit high ratings many times during my time in radio, but now it’s a 100 share thanks to the Imus-issue.

I’ve never been an Imus fan. Of course I’ve listened often since it’s part of the job to be media aware. This current issue about Imus’s racist remarks has me boiling. Enough is enough. Last night I spent a few hours reviewing a DVD of “All in the Family”. Archie was what, an “acceptable bigot?” The comments made by Archie about blacks made the comment by Imus seem very insignificant. The one episode features two black guys robbing Archie’s house. It’s a great episode. It’s fun. In this particular episode, the word “Jigaboo” is used a few times by Archie. Is that word acceptable? If I were during a talk show today and got on the air and said “nappy headed jigaboos” – would that be ok? Or have we gone backwards, losing our ability to laugh at ourselves, our color, our nationality, or religion. Why did “All in the Family” survive on the air? This is just one example. And what about the rap and hip-hop lyrics?

If Al Sharpton was doing a different kind of show – let’s say a show like Imus, and he called the Rutgers team “nappy headed hos” in jest, as Imus did, what would the result be?

I believe that you first must BE a racist to identify racism. If you are a person who simply enjoys humor and can laugh at the experience we call “life”, then you would probably not be offended by Imus, or Archie, or Geroge Carlin, or Don Rickles, or Howard Stern or whoever. But if your sensitivities and mental focus are wrapped around racism in all it’s shapes and forms, then what does that say? All of the time consumed by this issue will result in what good? Imus may lose his job. But will racism stop? Will this bring a complete and total understanding and acceptance between all the people on the earth? Will this bring peace among all people?

Will the Rutgers women feel good about the outcome?

No.

It just creates more problems and a lack of understanding between the races. And it’s too bad that people like Sharpton use their power to perpetuate more negative effects in a situation like this than positive ones.

If we can’t laugh at ourselves then we’re doomed. “We the people” – ALL the people should not be led down the path of destruction by closeted racist claiming to be champions of the people. They thrive on strife and discontent because that gives them the power to be in control. Think for yourself. Are the women of Rutgers really “Nappy-headed hos?” They don’t think so. I don’t. You probably don’t. It was another stupid non-thinking comment made by a grossly overpaid, poorly embalmed, over the hill radio prima-donna. Why waste all this time?

What is the difference between Archie and Imus? Archie was fictional. Imus is a parody.

A joke.

I couldn't have said it better myself. As another who's been in radio nearly 40 years, the Archie example brings back the memories of a time when we could laugh at ourselves. Then some idiot invented Political Correctness and the whole place has been screwed up ever since. Don Imus made a terrible slip of the tongue that lead to a demeaning comment about a group of college girls that was entirely uncalled for. He has apologized on-the-air and will do so to the Rutger's team. He didn't have to and shouldn't have had to apologize to Sharpton or Jackson. It could have been anyone making a comment that day, but it just so happened that both Sharpton and Jackson didn't have anything better to do and Sanjaya was taking their spotlight.

If a cop lock you up for Drunk driving , Do you blame the Cop ? Im not calling Al or Jesse the cops , but Imus did it to himself .

Difference with between Imus, Sharpton, and Jackson, is Imus does not HATE anyone. He may not like them, he may say crude things about them (I think you will find Don to be an equal opportunity offender).

However, Sharpton and Jackson hate white people and have made in clear!

Jesse Jackson Buddy Bill Clinton must Hate White People . Sharpton Must Hate All these Gangsta White Rappers .

Why don't all of "You People" Just go and take a cold shower and get the hell over it already?
Screw MSNBC, Screw Don Imus, Screw WFAN, and that Ladies basketball team and the horse that they rode in on.
Thank God that the Congress and the Senate will be back in session next week because if they had been working the last two weeks this story would have never blown up like it has. Too many idle reporters caused all of this.
Don Imus this weeks sacrificial lamb. God Bless his rotting corpse and the new nail in CBS Radio's coffin. Dan Mason hasn't got a snowballs chance in hades turning CBS Radio around now! He should quit now while he is ahead! He has got to be spitting nails at this point.

YOU're high, Sharpton and Jackson do not hate anyone, they happen to be black so of course they're fighting for justice for their tribe first before say the white tribe which is doing pretty well without anyone fighting for it!. What part of Jesse Jackson's "Rainbow Coalition" screams " I HATE WHITE PEOPLE"?......By the way it is not about Jackson, Sharpton or anyone but IMus and what he said, what HE SAID. HE did it to himself kids, quit trying to eclipse the issue with who Sharpton and Jackson like or dislike, that's BS.

Imus is not an equal opportunity offender, anyone who has worked with or around him know this: He is KNOWN behind the mic to be very bigoted toward blacks, period. Has been for years.......mostly because he's an old fart from the Jim Crow era, that's just the way he is made. Howard has stated on air (long ago, years ago before this controversy) that Imus has referred to black secretaries at WNBC as the N word. He;s a bitter old man with certain beliefs that are bigoted. I dont care what he thinks personally but he shot himself in the foot when his views colored his attempt at humor, and the "nappy headed ho's" comment wasnt even the worst, his copmparison between Rutgers and Tennesse looking like the " wannabe's vs the Jiggaboos" ( from the Spike lee Movie "School Daze" )was a much worse thing to throw out there. Sorry kids I just cant feel sorry for an old man, multi millionaire who keeps making teh same mistakes over and over when it coems to cerrtain material.

No offense but anyone who posts "Imus doesn't hate anyone but Jackson and Sharpton hate white people" is either Stupid or just needs to stop watching Fox news and thinking it is actually, NEWS.

He's HATEFUL plain and simple

How can call someone hateful for all that they've done in this word?

And you and others fail to put Imus' words in context.

Imus doesn't really think the women of the Rutgers basketball team are "nhh".

A. Consultant----All In The Family was a PARODY. The purpose of the show was to show how stupid Archie Bunker and racism is. You and Don Imus must not have been watching.

As much as I (and many, many others) might despise Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, I don't think it's either reasonable or warranted to anoint Imus as some sort of martyr. He apparently has a long history of bigoted comments and bullying people around, so I can't say I feel all that much empathy for the guy.

Footmill....

You missed my point I think. "All in the Family" was a parody. The things said on this show were not to be taken seriously. But they were said. The comment Imus made certainly was not to be taken seriously either. It was an afterthought on his part I'm sure. A quick comment, without thought. Blabber. It's just "entertainment". But in today's super-sensitive, politically correct world, it was a dangerous comment. In fact, it seems any opinion or observation shared over the airwaves by an air talent "could" be dangerous today. So what now? Do we create "Sensitivity Police" to monitor every air talent every day to protect the rights of every minority group? Do we offer "Sensitivity training" to every talent who offends? We listen to these people because they offer more than the safe, corporate liner card reading mellow music boring mindless jock. So is this what we are to be left with?

We're becoming too serious folks!

I humbly apoligize to all safe, liner card reading mellow music boring mindless jocks....you are the future of radio!

Making racist, sexist, homophobic demeaning remarks against others is NOT entertainment.

Imus' remark was not a joke it was racism raising it's ugly head through his potty mouth. His pattern of these kind of racial put-downs should never have been tolerated by ANYONE associated with the show - from the networks who only cared about GREEN to top Washington politicians and journalists. They are as much to blame as he is (the only person who I am aware of who spoke up and was never invited back was Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune),

If you think there isn't going to be "sensitivity" training throughout the industry, wake up. Clear Channel will send its on air people to sensitivity training classes very soon. That's no joke. I'm sure most other broadcast companies will be doing likewise.

Engage your brain before you speak. It may save your job...
