Radio “star” Dr. Lederman

I'm in New England and iHeartRadio is streaming me Lederman's ads targeting Washington, DC.

Par for the course.

Mark Simone on WOR, an iHeart station that regularly runs Lederman’s infomercials and commercials, assured his audience that all sponsors are thoroughly checked before they’re allowed on the air. Oops!

Vetting a client tends to be find out if they are licensed to do business, and generally does not involve making subjective judgements on the character of the advertisers. As far as they might go is a credit check and a review of their BBB standing.

You should see that this could easily go way too far to the point that stations might refuse to take My Pillow ads because they "think" that $60 is too much for a bag of ripped foam...

I believe Lederman’s infomercial, which is all commercial and zero info, appears nightly on WOR, as a “show” It appears on am970 at least weekly, also as a show. I think it also appears on WABC.

Essentially Mr Pillow was nabbed for making false claims about his special offers which were, well, just clever re-writing of previous offers. That charge was right on the borderline between legal puffery and a deceptive practice.

But note that the media running the ads was not directly involved. Nobody said that stations and cable nets should have vetted the claims as it is understood that media outlets are not the DoJ, the FDA, the Consumer Protection Agency of the FTC, the legal system, the law enforcement agencies, the state and local Attorney Generals' consumer protection offices and the BBB all rolled into one.

Better living through radio. My Pillow lost its BBB accreditation as a consequence of hounding listeners with discount promotions that are permanent discounts. Funny how every radio host whose show is sponsored by My Pillow can’t live without the My Pillow

They like to get paid for what they do. Most people do.

You won't hear those commercials or infomercials on stations that are in the top of the ratings. Only the ones at the bottom.

Why would you want to ruin the credibility of your station, damage it's reputation and basically have your listeners say "Well, you can't believe ANYTHING they say on the air because they're "partners" with these advertisers in fleecing people!" Especially damaging if your main product is disseminating NEWS! If they don't care about their reputation, why should I? They might as well be hookers standing on a street corner saying "Throw some money at me and I'll do anything you want!" Granted, they may have run the ads and didn't do any investigation on what they were saying was true or not but if it was brought to their attention that the claims were shady or questionable or a flat out lie, they probably should have yanked them or run a disclaimer. If they have a contract they signed that was so onerous to get out of then I could see them biting the bullet and just having to live with the deal.

Several years ago, when My Pillow was not a sponsor of Marc Simone’s radio show, a listener called in and asked if he thought the pillow worked and he said no, adding that he didn’t sleep on a My Pillow. Now, My Pillow advertises on his show and he gushes that he sleeps on a My Pillow and it’s “life-changing!”

Joe Piscopo wants to out-do everyone in the “No Credibility Department” and actually has the My Pillow guy regularly on his show as a guest, talking about politics and, of course, his pillows. A while back, the pillow guy announced on Piscopo’s show that he was offering “exclusively” only for listeners of the Piscopo show a “special deal” of discounted pillows. I changed the station to Imus a few seconds later and he was reading a My Pillow commercial and literally offered the same “special deal”
