RADIO 92-9 EARTHFEST CONCERT

W

Watt

Guest
The line-up for Radio 92-9’s EarthFest Concert at the Hatch Shell is CAKE, Cracker, the English Beat, and the Bodeans. Is this the best that they could do?

Granted, only around 10-15% of their playlist is current, but surely they could have gotten a contemporary act to put on the bill. I’m guessing that their programmers have no juice with the record labels since the station doesn’t help break new acts anymore.

"Is that the best they could do?" what do you care, unless, of course, you're just trying to stir up negative talk about an absolutely dead subject that few on this board care about.

A free show on the sunny hatch shell with Cake and the English Beat? I'm there, along with my kids, my wife and my friends with their kids and wives and 40-50 thousand others who dont give a crap about whether or not 92.9's programming team has any "juice" or not.

ah, please. wbos and rest of radio is not about new music. you want new stuff, go on the web or buy satellite radio. that's where new music lives. wbos and rest of radio is all about pleasing the boomers and gen-xers who still like the old sh*t and love the old school radio. check out the concert schedule for the tweeter center and the BoA pavillion. mostly yesterday's acts. that's what people who spend money on concerts and listen to radio want to see and hear. memories. new kids on the block are headlining kiss concert this weekend. talk about bad memories. and people will pay to see them, too.

never had a problem with earthfest. it is what it is. a giant marketing event. one massive focus group. but it comes with free music and product samples and that's in many people's price range thesedays.

It's more than just a free show on the (sometimes) sunny Hatch Shell; it's an opportunity for the station to brand itself in a way that is consistent with their new format.

Apparently they don't get that; neither do you.

Well said.

I thought this board was here to discuss the radio business/market in Boston? If we are not suppposed to discuss that then why are we here?

"40-50 thousand others...?" Come on. There will most likely be a ton of people there, but 40 - 50 THOUSAND sounds a bit ridiculous. We're talking about Cake and The English Beat here. Oh wait - Cracker! That'll push it past the 40 thousand mark!

Who knows...the past few years have drawn 100k plus (according to numbers that I have read in the paper). They may not get that this year but 40-50 thousand sounds like a fair if not low number.

ditto...

This is a bit of a knit picky thread, if I can use such harsh words... If you don't like the line up, don't go. Go check out River Rave, and see all of the flavors of the week....oh hold on the headliner is a band that had its big success in the 90s, and is reformed. Any free music is good music, beggers can't be choosers...so as I heard a wise man say DEAL WITH IT

Are you a 30-something year old woman?? I am willing to bet not. Their 2 shows at the Garden will sell out, too. I am not, in the least bit, interested in the show, but I understand the impact of that tour with a lot of women...and those women control the spending in the house.

As for the WBOS show, it's becoming more and more difficult to line up free shows with current artists in the current radio landscape. That's why KISS and BCN have good bands at their respective shows...and you have to pay to go.

Great. Another one who thinks he knows everything about everyone who posts here.

Actually, Watt, I have, from my programming chair, helped produce many free radio shows at the Hatch so I completely know what I am talking about. Here's what you don't understand about these kind of shows:

when all is said and done, these shows are not so much a branding opportunity as they are a sales and marketing opportunity for the sponsors of the event itself. the people doing the actual branding at this event are the companies shelling out the dough to position their product to the people who attend. A large majority of the people who attend this 92.9 show (myself included) may not be regular listeners of the station; they've just heard about it thru the grapevine, read about it in the paper, etc. and just want to attend the event because it sounds like fun. 92.9 wont gain my loyalty because of the show or because of who plays in the show, but the advertiser may gain me as a user of their product. Everybody wins in the end.

You dont brand your station via exclusive free shows and concerts that are relative to your format (re: WFNX Jazz Hatch concerts - sure, they do a jazz brunch, but the concert is not put on to support the show. It's put on to drive sales revenue). That's only a small part of the equation because you only have that kind of opportunity maybe once or twice a year. You brand thru clever year-round marketing campaigns that force listeners to tune in and to do so over long periods of time.

I have to go now. Time to milk the cows.

the current radio landscape is all about which demos are currently in charge. gen-xers(26-43) and boomers(44-60) love radio. these demos are huge, have money to spend, love radio and will be dictating formats for the next 15-20 years. and they appreciate terrestrial radio in any delivery form - car, home, work computer, mobile, etc. that's why wbos, wror, wzlx, wods, wbcn, wfnx, wzlx, mike, kiss, mix keep playing all or some nostalgia or digging out briefly forgotten musical acts which have way passed their expiration date for their free or paid shows.

the next i-generation(everyone 25 and under) doesn't like radio. not the stations. not the concept. there's simply no need for it in their lives. new technologies have already replaced terrestrial radio for this demo. these people camped out for days in front of the new apple store in copley. they won't be camping out for nkotb tour tickets.

I have gone to WBOS Earthday shows in years past -
really haven't listened to the ststion much for 15 or so
years, however. Hey a free show on a nice day - what's not
to like? If I were in town this weekend, maybe I would go to
check out the English Beat. The rest of the lineup - don't really
care one way or the other...

I stand corrected.

I went this weekend. It was a good time. SO MANY people, of all ages, ethnic, racial, and social backgrounds, stereotypes etc. The free advertising alone for 92.9 was insane. The English Beat were AMAZING and so was Cracker and Cake. Not bad for a free show on a beautiful Memorial Day Weekend afternoon!!!
