Just have a feeling they are both going to do well in the Fall Book. Look out Q and Fox. Thoughts?

i gotta say that when i'm not listening to talk, i hardly ever go astray from 94.1 or 94.9. finally a format that "gets" the whole "shuffle" mentality that iPods have given to music.

you have got to be freakin kidding me. I have listened to "Radio 94-1" and I honestly hardly recognize the music. Maybe I'm not the demo but they must be desperate for listeners...they sent me an invite at home to listen. Not that I would want to, but I work for another broadcasting company in town. To give them a fair shake, i'm not big on The Sound either...although I recognize more songs on there. I do wish that Bonneville would change the format of The Sound. Listened the other day during lunch and could not believe the "talent" they had on...he sounded so uninterested...it made me uninterested so I tuned out.

WKRQ is a well programmed, solid station and barely has any similarities of Radio 94.1. WKRQ wont slope a ton, if anything at all...

Kiss and WKRQ are in a battle.

Re: 'Just a 'GRR ramble/request

I struggle [just a bit] to admit this, given the corporate entity involved... WGRR gets a full FIVE-STAR reading on the product review scale! They’ve handled the required transition back into the [so-called] “money demo” with full finesse. HARDLY-SO at the current same-owner equivalent in Indy—where the painted-dinnerware company flushed EVERY OUNCE of their “emotional bank account” down-the-drain [at WGLD] to avoid the dreaded 50-something label – and “CumeLess—The Successor” has done little to un-juke the Jack.

ATTENTION ‘GRR “Programming types”—EXCEPTIONAL JOB!

Earth-to-The Cloud... Earth-to-Atlanta... Keep your mangy mitts OFF this fine station. Your affinity for “top-down” is well-known; but PLEASE don’t tarnish the luster provided by your “Lackeys” at 103.5!

Re: 'Just a 'GRR ramble/request

"...WGRR gets a full FIVE-STAR reading on the product review scale!"

To our usually bullseye accurate Mr. H:

I couldn't disagree more. I hear this Cumulus ghost of WGRR everyday - and I mourn at the hamhanded way this so-called transition has been handled.

A talented veteran airstaff, saddled with a burnt to a crisp playlist - now playing every break safe, while fearfully trying to fly under the radar and avoid becoming the next Cumulus Cincinnati budget cut.

A clueless cheerleader of a GM, too young to know the music - and too afraid to let anyone who does come near the programming side of the building.

A PD lacking at talent direction, library management and promotional innovation. VT'ed calls, time and artist name breaks. Zero content. The time worn evergreen of a commercial free drive at five complete with a replay of some stale-as-yesterday's-donuts morning show bit.

Yeah. Couldn't disagree more. You really disappointed me this time Mr. H.

Mr. R-I Lover... I respectfully accept your disagreement, and I’m sorry to “disappoint”!

You hear “this Cumulus ghost” EVERYDAY—and I must admit that I DON’T. Your standards for this format genre are appreciably-HIGH [as are mine], but the effects of corporate radio have “dumbed-down” even MY expectations—unfortunately to a level where I’m happy just to see a once-stellar pre-modern music station simply survive this pathetic invention called “the money demo”. That “marketing lingo” is little-more than an excuse for the progressing deficiency of agency order-takers [and their masters]—looking for an excuse for their shrinking supply of “easy money”. Who better to blame it on then some poor group of aging Baby Boomers—guilty of the unpardonable sin of owning a Time/Life Music collection and ageing gracefully.

I hope you can find some agreement with my contrast of WGRR and its far-less-fortunate sibling up I-74 in Indianapolis. There is little similarity in Cumulus’ treatment; so from a fan’s perspective living within WGRR’s coverage, I can imagine at least a reticent “Thank Goodness for small favors” response to today’s version of WGRR. Listen to but an hour of the “Indy-Jack”, and consider the horribly-callous manner in which the multiple Marconi-winning WGLD met its fate—and I think you could understand at least a small celebratory dance for 103.5.

Let me offer speculation that you might appreciate the efforts of those at WDJO. You know by your visits here that I CERTAINLY DO! Is their talent more in-tune with their format environment; might they [by their many-years of experience and love for the medium] be more qualified as hosts; are Big Joe London, Dangerous Dan Allen, and Gary Pall more on par with the weekday roster; and is their library better-managed? [I need turn-on all-caps to provide required emphasis] YOU BET! Are they a “better Oldies station”? SubjectivelyYES! But note that WDJO is also a “different Oldies station” from WGRR... Or is 103.5 in fact—not an “Oldies” station AT ALL?

While a ’62 Corvette DEMANDS a V-8 engine; an ’82 Nova might “get by” on fewer cylinders. I am more than willing to join you in agreement that [in 2007] and [with Cumulus in control] WGRR’s bar might be set at a less-than-Olympic level; and ITS “reality” may be substantially revised from OURS. If their challenge within the near-monolithic architecture and mindset of corporate radio is to “get by”—WGRR seems to be “getting by” within their fraternity BETTER than The Bros elsewhere!

Ratings are out tomorrow. I guess we will see how much the Cincinnati audience misses sock-hop radio with "real" personalities.

Just a quick note.... the Chevrolet Nova stopped production back in 1979 and was re-introduced in 1986 as a 4 cylinder economy car... so there is no such thing as a 1982 Nova. :) I do however agree with everything else that you have to say. 8)

"...I guess we will see how much the Cincinnati audience misses sock-hop radio with "real" personalities..."

My dearest punim:

Thanks for writing. It's always grr-eat to see a new generation of GRR bootlicks joining our party.

It's most interesting that you make mention of "sock hop radio." Especially when I didn't say anything about era. Nor did I use the term "real personality." But clearly, your made-obvious-daily shortcomings in that area have left you feeling sensitive. Your overly defensive conclusion jumping can be understood - and graciously forgiven.

But jeepers, Skippy. Where do I begin to reply? I've predicted your bastardization of GRR will be the summer's top FM. Let's start by considering the reason for my hunch? It's simple. We've all done a great job at dumbing down the listener. They now expect - and even flock to - the generic, the redundant, and the ridiculous. With that, GRR's current success should be obvious.

Will the current success of GRR last? Here's a lesson for the radio bootlick who thinks he knows it all...

A few years back, a barbeque joint up the street had fallen on hard times. So they hired a new manager, a new pit master, added some new signage, painted the walls and cracked the whip on the wait staff about how to sell the new menu.

Slowly, as word spread about the changes, diners began to flock to the updated restaurant. For almost a year, the queue was around the block. Wait times were over an hour for a table. Diners couldn't get enough.

Trouble was, the new menu wasn't really unique or special. Just a rehash of the same ol' thing. The food wasn't any better, only packaged differently. Gradually diners began to take notice. Two years later, the barbeque joint that seemed so popular - so unbeatable - was out of business, with the property up for auction.

Enjoy the summer book, bootlick. You'll soon find that with time, listeners discover that you're doing it all with smoke and mirrors. That you're nothing new, nothing unique. Just the same ol' thing. And gradually, as radio listeners always have, they'll go away.

Mr. H:

Where to begin? First, you're a h*ll of a great writer. But to the subject of WGRR vs. Jack...

I'm sorry. But again, I disagree. If given the choice of trying to evolve the brand - or to start new, I vote for starting new.

I hated seeing WGLD make its abrupt descent into radio's history book. Still I admired Susquehanna for making the change with a clean cut. Much as I had admired Emmis, with their handling of the change from Oldies 93 to 70s hits WNAP, a decade earlier.

WGRR should have gone away - lock, stock and air staff - long before Cumulus took over. Personally, I would hold the evolution in much higher respect if they had.

Golly gee whiz! You sure did read a lot into a simple post. Let me nurse my wounds from that sharp tongue of yours.

Ratings are out tomorrow. I guess we will see how much the Cincinnati audience misses sock-hop radio with "real" personalities.

"...Golly gee whiz! You sure did read a lot into a simple post..."

Your point was more than clear, and just as foolhardy as the Tim Closson era GRR boosters. Cheers.

iluvri07,

I have a few seconds between bootlicking and thought I'd say hi. Let's address some of your snark & awe messages. Midwestx you ain't.

I couldn't disagree more. I hear this Cumulus ghost of WGRR everyday - and I mourn at the hamhanded way this so-called transition has been handled.
Hamhanded is a pretty neat word. You didn't say anything, but hamhanded is still neat. The first signs of a pattern. Also, take off your black veil and mourning clothes. It's just a radio station. And stop talking about ghosts. Those things scare the crap out of me. You should see what they are serving after the funeral! Yum!

A talented veteran airstaff, saddled with a burnt to a crisp playlist - now playing every break safe, while fearfully trying to fly under the radar and avoid becoming the next Cumulus Cincinnati budget cut. The old playlist wasn't burnt to a crisp? What oldies station or classic hits list isn't burnt to a crisp. How exactly are the breaks safer now? An example please. Also, what are the examples of Cumulus Cincinnati budget cuts of people who didn't fly under the radar. (fly under the radar is a great cliche) Is Cumulus part of the Air Force or Delta Airlines? What is this flying under the radar. Again, you typed something. You didn't really say anything, but you certainly did type something. A pattern of sweeping generalizations is forming here. We are testing the waters here. Sorry, that cliche means they are with the Navy not Air Force.

A clueless cheerleader of a GM, too young to know the music - and too afraid to let anyone who does come near the programming side of the building. A GM in her mid-40's is too young? It did sound good though. The rest of this sentence is too silly to respond to because it doesn't really say anything. Kind of sinister. Maybe they have a moat around the studios. A cheerleader outfit would be kind of hot. Do they do those pyramid cheers like Tony Basil?

A PD lacking at talent direction, library management and promotional innovation. VT'ed calls, time and artist name breaks. Zero content. The time worn evergreen of a commercial free drive at five complete with a replay of some stale-as-yesterday's-donuts morning show bit. Please explain to an old bootlick what "a PD lacking at talent direction" means. A guy that kept a jammin' oldies station on top for years? He takes over a dead station and wins again and is now lacking in something? What exactly does library management and promotional innovation mean? How is the library not being managed? Promotional innovation? What have you specifically heard that you don't like. No, I need 5 things. It shouldn't be hard to come up with as you listen to the station everyday. Zero content? Zero content (oh boy, another generic bomb toss), VT'ed calls? When is the station VT'd? Recycling the morning show in afternoon drive is bad? A lot of generic generalization being tossed around. Wait! I smell something slow cooking down in this post.

Thanks for writing. It's always grr-eat to see a new generation of GRR bootlicks joining our party.
A bootlick? Why call names? The benefit of doubt for credibility is slipping fast. Hey, wait just one minute! I just caught the whole grr-eat to see thing! You are good. Real good. Grr-reat! I'll be chuckling myself all the way home tonight. Speaking of going home tonight, I need to pick up dinner. I hear a good place just opened up that everyone is lining up to get in.

HOw do you know about my short-comings? It's not the size of the wand, it is the magic in it. The era and style of what you consider a successful oldies station could be called "sock hop". Era is a given as you point to change from oldies to classic hits. That is era. It's a code on Selector, too. A dandy one at that. Don't contradict yourself in adjoining sentences. It doesn't do your shaky credibility any good. The term "real" is just fine to point out that you think the old personalities were better. Real as in real-deal is just fine. No gotcha on this one. Like the pattern, it sounded good and probably left chuckling at your rapier wit. I hardly said a word other than to point out what you already posted. Overly defensive? I think someone who posts like you is the black kettle calling out defensive pots. Or a pits?

But jeepers, Skippy. Where do I begin to reply? I've predicted your bastardization of GRR will be the summer's top FM. Let's start by considering the reason for my hunch? It's simple. We've all done a great job at dumbing down the listener. They now expect - and even flock to - the generic, the redundant, and the ridiculous. With that, GRR's current success should be obvious.
This is where it gets fun. When did you post all of this visionary stuff? What are some of your other aliases? Bootlick now Skippy. A fine peanut butter, sure it is but it hurts my feelings when you are calling me Skippy. I lost my whole second grade class to peanut allergies. Words hurt. Dumbing down the listeners? What the heck analogy are we going for. I'll strap in and hope I can understand. Generic and general words like generic, redundant, and the ridiculous. Not backed up in any way. The station is doing well and will be the top FM by doing exactly what the audience wants and expects? That would make the current success obvious. Got it. My tummy is starting to growl.

Will the current success of GRR last? Here's a lesson for the radio bootlick who thinks he knows it all..
. Oy! Again with the bootlick! A couple of sentences replying to a silly little generic bomb throwing post and I'm a Cumulus bootlick that thinks he knows it all. You are doing all the heavy lifting here friend. Can't wait to see what is coming up. Damn, is that hickory I'm smelling?

A few years back, a barbeque joint up the street had fallen on hard times. So they hired a new manager, a new pit master, added some new signage, painted the walls and cracked the whip on the wait staff about how to sell the new menu. Gotcha. New rib joint. New staff and new folks running it. I'm still with you.

Slowly, as word spread about the changes, diners began to flock to the updated restaurant. For almost a year, the queue was around the block. Wait times were over an hour for a table. Diners couldn't get enough. Yep, still with you on this one. New place that people like enough to tell others about. Must be good generic ribs and painted walls. I'm craving ribs. You hooked me. Hey, did they fire all the employees who flew under the pit?

Trouble was, the new menu wasn't really unique or special. Just a rehash of the same ol' thing. The food wasn't any better, only packaged differently. Gradually diners began to take notice. Two years later, the barbeque joint that seemed so popular - so unbeatable - was out of business, with the property up for auction. Now I'm ticked-off! My friends went there in mass. Business grew and grew with all the good reviews from word of mouth watering mouth. Now the ribs aren't mouth watering? But I really like ribs! I thought they would have noticed the bad ribs and new signs before they came back and lined up around the block. I need a better caliber of friends. Where is Ted Gregory when we need him. I'll settle for the British guy who comes and fixes rib joints on the telly.

Enjoy the summer book, bootlick. You'll soon find that with time, listeners discover that you're doing it all with smoke and mirrors. That you're nothing new, nothing unique. Just the same ol' thing. And gradually, as radio listeners always have, they'll go away. I think the winter, spring, and now summer books have all been enjoyed. Sounds like a place where they walk around wearing those cool rib bibs. Is the pit boss named something cool like "curly" (you know those crazy pig tales are curly)? Maybe "Smokey" or the one I like best when a really big guy is called "Tiny". Let's say the pit boss is Tiny. Do they have those moist towellettes on their desks? That is a lot of smoke and even more mirrors you bring up. I get it. Smoke like the rib joint smokes meat. Nothing new or unique doesn't win? The same old thing? I thought you said the ghost has changed everything? I must have eaten too many ribs. You seem to be saying things out of both sides of your bbq stained mouth. Let's see if that young cheerleader GM can come over and wipe your mouth. Hey Mickey you're so fine, you're so fine. Well, you know. Same old thing doesn't work in Cincinnati does it. Radical stations like WEBN, WUBE, WRRM, and WKRQ are pretty new to the market. Hope they catch on with their unique programming.

Your point was more than clear, and just as foolhardy as the Tim Closson era GRR boosters.
Foolhardy from saying wait for the book and "real" and "sockhop". Hamhanded and Foolhardy! Isn't that the new crazy ABC show about two guys who open a BBQ place and anger all of their friends every week that is on after that Caveman show? Hands-off Closson. When you move out of your mom's basement you might need a house. Okay, sorry. I just went down to your level. It was that or a reference to you photo shopping yourself in the that nude Vanessa Hudgens photo. Sorry for that.

Gotta go. Boots are piling up and this tongue ain't getting any lickier.

Now go out there and give them 110 percent! Have ice water in your veins. Drop us a another generic radio cliche post. They don't know what they like, they like what they hear! It is not if you win or lose, it's how you play the game. It is a game of inches out there so don't post generic posts. Don't zig when you should have zagged. Less is more!

I will give Farprishtehpunim credit for writing one of the longer posts I've ever seen on here and enjoying his own stuff way too much.

"...Can't we awwwl just get alawwwng?"

He started it!!!!! ;)

But thanks to Cary for once again offering some down to earth common sense. I remain a fan.
