My sister works in the loan department at a bank in Maryland. Yesterday she was telling me that besides the usual credit checks, the kind of job you have could very well play a major role in the decision whether or not you will/will not get that loan.
Among the so-called "high risk" jobs....radio announcer !!! It was in the top 3. Working for a temporary agency is #1 while fast food outside of management was second.
Just the other day a young man came in to apply for a loan to buy a new car. For the last 10 years he worked as board/op and announcer for a local radio station. Despite all those years of employment working for one company and being full-time, the bank turned him down for that loan only because of the kind of job he did. The bank feared that by giving him the loan, well what would happen if he found himself out of a job which happens very often in radio.
BTW, the bank asked the young man to give a form to the management at his radio station. A promise by them that they would NOT fire him during the course of the loan. Of course the station refused to sign it.
After hearing this, I wonder how many other radio announcers out there faced a similar issue. Being turned down for loan or whever because the bank, loan company, or credit union was concerned because he/she worked in radio?
