A new Spanish radio station will soon be hitting the airwaves of Victoria and the surrounding area. KHCB's Spanish network, "Radio Amistad," has expanded its coverage with the addition of KMAT, 105.1 FM.
The 40,000-watt station broadcasts from Seadrift covering a 50-mile radius and includes the cities of Edna, Port Lavaca, Port O'Connor, Rockport and Victoria.
"The Hispanic population in Texas is growing and we are excited to provide them top quality non-commercial programming that meets physical, emotional and spiritual needs," said Dolly Martin, program director of "Radio Amistad."
"Radio Amistad" means Friendship Radio, Martin added.
The Spanish-language programming originates in Houston at the KHCB headquarters. KMAT is the eighth station to join KHCB's Spanish network called "Red de Radio Amistad" (Friendship Radio Network). KHCB began airing one hour of Spanish-language programming in 1966 on its flagship station, KHCB FM. Spanish broadcasts expanded to 24 hours in 1991 after KHCB acquired AM 1400 in Galveston.
"Radio Amistad" has affiliate stations in Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina.
