Radio Bartering and Syndication.

As I struggle to wrap my head around long-form syndication, I keep seeing the term "barter" pop up.

What exactly does that mean? Barter? Does a person with a show idea, approach a radio station, and give that show, in exchange for airtime on that radio station? Lastly, how does anyone make money from this? Any ideas?

Thank you.

Bascially what bartering means is that you get to run our show, free of charge. You just agree to carry our commercials on your station. You get the show, we get the commercial time.

The show's producer sells the ad airtime in the syndicated show. They get the money, for getting the spots (ads) in more and more markets.

The more and bigger markets you get, the more you get to charge for the spots. That's why ESPN and Radio Disney absolutely have to have outlets in New York.

It's been said that if a syndicator can get stations in NY. LA and Chicago, he'll break even. Everything else is gravy.

And I believe ESPN is no longer barter. They're charging fees in addition to the inventory.
