Radio Blogs: Where Do You Draw The Line?

BlatherWatch has posted an attack on Assoc ND Dan Restione of KIRO here: http://blatherwatch.blogs.com/talk_radio/2008/02/dan-restione-do.html#comments

It's one thing to stir up crap about bad relations between Gregg and Jayne in the morning with no proof whatsoever, but to go after a desk editor? Michael Hood has gone WAY over the line.

If that's the case, why stop there? Why not pay to access on-line information about all the reporters and producers as to their bad credit, criminal records, restraining orders, or whatever? Let's dig up all the dirt on Tony Minor, Tim Haeck, Ursula Reuotin and everyone else.

I'm sorry, but blogs like this don't warrant protection under "free speech;" this is a new low, bordering on libel/slander.

Just had to get it out there. Unfortunately, by "getting it out there," I'm just generating more traffic to BlatherWatch which makes me ill.

Hey Corp,

It's easy enough. I kept all my college stuff, just get the proof out there that he went to Harvard and move on.
What the big. Don't tell me his mom threw all stuff out. Dang moms, mine threw out valuable baseball cards.

First, it's not libel if it's true. He posted on KIRO's web site that he went to Harvard. He told the Seattle P-I the same. Harvard has never heard of him.

Second, the issue is not whether or not he needs a degree to do the job. The issue is that he lied. The news media may not be what it used to, but we still rely on it to tell the truth. The media had a field day with Jane Hague's faked resume during her re-election campaign. Why is it not news that a manager at a major news outlet faked his resume?

He may not have the public profile of Gregg or Jane, but as a manager he directs news coverage. If he lied about his education to get ahead, what has he lied about on the air to have a good story?

KIRO has a serious ethical problem on its hands.

Nothing to get your panties in a wad over corp suit. I agree with Big Daddy & Dunno on this one. If it's not true, don't get all worked up about it. Appearantly it might be true. Karma is an amazing thing. It'll bite you in your hooter gooter every time.

The specific issue doesn't really make my radar .. but a couple of undercurrents are putting my panties in a bunch:

a. When Webb was accused of lying (about being gone from his shift) there was a big outcry of "hoist him". Now it's ok.

b. Few months ago I expressed a grievance here about folks plagarizing emails and posting them on here and other blogs ... and you folks tell me "get over it ... it's the Internet. people can do whatever they want". Now the party line is "the Internet better be pure and sanitary with fact-checking and credibility?".

All I ask is that someone issue a memo now and then when the "official" positions change on these things. You can't argue both sides of the issues depending on what suits your specific agenda at any given point in time.

And yeah...I read the 'hood' piece and didn't think it was THAT inflammatory. All the interchange about the guy's personal life was unprofessional, but the issue of challenging whether his own admission of credentials is true or not IS a reasonable thing to present to folks. Very little difference between that and the political tricks. Not very professional ... but apparently within the boundaries of what people willing to tolerate.

1. Its an online blog, to a lesser degree, like Perez Hilton. CMON!

2. They did their homework, and it seems pretty cut and dry, Harvard hasnt heard of him. If he wanted to sue for Libel/Slander he had better pony up the degree, or at least a report card, from Harvard.

3. Makes me laugh that people obviously dont check facts on a resume (even when your in the news world). I think Ill change mine to being a Yale grad and make my former stations read: KIIS-FM, WHTZ-FM, WLS-AM and BBC Radio One. As an old PD of mine once said, 'I never looked at your resume, just listened to your tape'.

If by "attack" you mean "pointed out he doesn't seem to be telling the truth" then, yes, it most certainly is a vicious attack of the very worst sort.

It's one thing to stir up crap about bad relations between Gregg and Jayne in the morning with no proof whatsoever, but to go after a desk editor? Michael Hood has gone WAY over the line.

Er...are you new to the internet? Heck, have you had any contact with the media at all in the last..oh...two hundred years? A public personality making a demonstrably false claim, as appears to be the case here, is what we like to call "news".

I'm sorry, but blogs like this don't warrant protection under "free speech;"

Sorry Hoss, but this is exactly what free speech is all about. Sometimes it sucks, especially when you're on the receiving end, but it's worth it. The alternative isn't nearly as nice as you seem to imagine.

...this is a new low, bordering on libel/slander.

"Bordering", of course, being the key word. If it doesn't cross that border, to stretch a metaphor to the breaking point, then it's a perfectly acceptable example of free speech. Our laws are quite clear on that. Go America! Woot!

Just had to get it out there. Unfortunately, by "getting it out there," I'm just generating more traffic to BlatherWatch which makes me ill.

But you let everyone know that someone, somewhere, said something you don't like on the internet. And really, isn't that what's really important?

Your friend forever,
Biggus

Would your alma mater, wherever it may be, a alternative high school to Yale, even MATTER anymore? It's all about SCHMOOZING in THIS biz. It's not WHAT you know but WHO you know....
