Radio Campesina

They have been running ads for awhile now for managers in BK and pasco washington. You always wonder when openings go on for what seems like forever and never get filled, like maybe there is a problem with the company.

Rumor has it that they sold off KBDS and its going dark on Friday.... Anyone know the truth behind that?

Sounds like a possible sophomoric rumor started at KISV, but anything is possible. It's a trick from the old days.

Let me stand corrected. Allaccess is reporting KBDS going dark tomorrow due to lack of sales. The irony is that the last trend had them up and KISV down significantly. In fact, I think this is the closest the stations have ever been in the numbers.

Seriously, Bakersfield is way over-radioed. The market is due for at least two more rim-shot stations soon plus the dark 102.1 in Ford City may or may not return to the air someday.

Yeah, I thought it was good to see a second Rhythmic starting to gain ground in recent months, and now this.

According to a friend of mine who is very well versed in spanish media...

Radio Campesina/The Farmer Workers Union is good at radio.. operating non commercial stations and selling sponsorships on those... but they have no idea how to run a commercial radio station and sell spots on it.....

The words "incompetent" and "idiots" were also thrown around a few times.

I should add that the same type of folks/groups/businesses that buy the non comm sponsorships aren't the same type who'd buy commercials on stations like 103.9

Why would you let a station go "dark"? EVER? Sounds like the transmitter is still on...
Just let the computer run in auto until you figure out what you're gonna do with it...
simulcast one of you other stations on it... something??? but just dead-air? I don't get it. ???

Some companies are too cheap or don't have the money to pay the electric bill when there's no revenue coming in.. and they don't feel like paying to have someone sit in the office 9 to 5

The transmitter is in Taft, perhaps they don't have the funds for the fuel to drive out there and turn it off!
(Looks like a new frequency is opening up for those wishing to do their own thing 8) )

To bad Taft, is such a hostile city to do business in, otherwise KBDS could return to Taft, and serve the community it's licensed to serve in the first place. I know several broadcasters that make a nice living serving their community of license; Ridgecrest, Ca., despite the presence of many Los Angeles FM signals via translators. Of coarse that will all change when Brock begins to gut the military next year, and China Lake takes a hit! Ridgecrest, will become a ghost own in short order.

At onetime 103.9, did very well in the Bakersfield ratings, programming from 6th street in Taft as a stand alone. While community broadcasters are taking a hit too, it's not nearly as bad as the mega broadcasters with the mass layoffs, debt load and southbound stock prices. For the future; 103.9 would be great for a savvy Ma & Pa broadcaster, but only if the price was right! The Mann's might even be interested in getting involved again.

THANK GOD! THANK GOD! I am so glad Play 103.9 or should I say WACK 103.9 is finally shuttin down. That station was the worse in the history of Rhythmic radio. There signal was weak, there djs were horrible, and programming was garbage. This company should have never started a Rhythmic station as to one there had a clue what to do. It would have saved them the headache and embarrasement of all this.

Such a warm message from whom I'm sure is a very nice guy! :)

This is how you spell embarrassment.

Dude, you are an idiot! Hot and Play had/have the same identical playlist. The Dj's c'mon! Big Boy in the morning, margarita in the afternoon and d-lay at night, these are all good jocks. The last trend was a 4.0 12+, the last time they had anything higher was when they just started. Bottom line if they had a bigger better signal they could compete but HOT is a monster. If KBDS would have hired a GM that knows the format and understands the listeners and would have hired a sales staff and not just that one weasel they have they would of could have made some money. The closing of KBDS is all political within the company.

Uh your an idiot. Hot and Play did not have the same identical playlist. Play had more latin hiphop as to where Hot didn't except like 1 or 2. Yeah they both played a lot of the same stuff but definitely not identical. And you have a bad taste in talent. You said those djs were good. Yeah right. They were the worse except for Big Boy who don't count because he's syndicated. Play was long overdue to shutdown and it finally happened. The garbage has finally been thrown.

Ok you got me if you include Capone or lil Rob, my bad. Whatever the case may be KBDS would never be able to beat HOT, no doubt but did but a little dent and I am sure they knew that... Bottom line no revenue coming in and BIG POLITICS from the main office. D-LAY and the rest of the crew did the best they could with what they had. Bring in another CHR/RYTHMIC station with the same coverage that HOT does and the story would be different, as for the DJ's at HOT, they are good just as the guys at PLAY (except for the mid-day guy at PLAY). Don't hate.

Play 103.9fm was a great station. They have solid books for the past 4 quarters. They have started to take away some ratings from KISV. For their budget they had good solid promotions. They had awesome cume. This last trend they even beat KLLY, Groove and got within 3 points of KISV. KISV has a monster signal, but on the streets they are no good. KBDS had very successful shows and some good nightclub events.

For them to have such good ratings and such a small staff (4.5) they did a great job. Some stations have 10 to 20 employees and they cant even accomplish what they have.

KBDS started to slowly bring in more money but the other stations have stopped generating what they once had. Along with KBDS they put 2 other stations for sale in other markets. The only AE that they had told me that this year he had already generated more sales then the previous year.

All in all play would have been a great station. The only reason that KBDS failed was do to LACK of interest and the inexperience of the owners. It really did not fail....more or less it comes to a personal reasons. :-\
