I had the opportunity to attend my first Radio Classics performance tonight at Massasoit Community College. What a night!
They started with their inaugural Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame class. Inductees were Bob and Ray, Jess Cain, and Rex Trailer. Unfortunately, Bob Elliott isn't feeling well and couldn't attend, but Ray's son gave a moving speech about the two men, their bond, and what it meant for him and his family. Jess Cain looks and sounds great. as does Rex Trailer. The man behind Boomtown is still razor sharp.
I only stayed til the intermission of the performances, but Duffy's Tavern and Pinocchio stand out in my mind.
Kudos to WBZ's Jordan Rich, who's a great performer, as is WBZ's Laurie Kirby. If you haven't heard this voice major sing, well for cryin' out loud, find out if and when she's singing again and go hear her! Robin Young was also fantastic, as was Barry Nolan, although he kept calling the school "Massachusetts" instead of "Massassoit" at first. But he caught himself, to his credit.
Ken Meyer and Ben Parker were there, along with Rod Fritz. Those three were also great.
It was great seeing how radio shows used to be done, with piano accompanyment and sound effects. I was seated in the front row, as far to the right (stage left) as you can get, right next to the sound effects table. Semi-obstructed view, but I didn't miss anything.
Crowd was a bit older, generally, but there were some younger folks mixed in too. Just a great atmosphere in the auditorium.
Bottom line: if you missed the show on WATD 95.9, and you're into this sort of thing, don't miss next year's shows.
