Radio Classics Relief

With the regular host gone for a week, it's such a pleasure to listen to the Old Radio Programs (channel 82) without his endless, self-promotion of himself and his web site, along with multiple name mentions. And that voice of his is really annoying. Even my wife commented that it sounds like it belongs to a member of the 6th grade boys choir! Enjoy the week!!

I like Greg Bell OK (yes, he pushes his site a bit much) but I preferred the Radio Classics hosts that Sirius had before the merger. (Except for that weekend guy who thought he was the next Jean Shepherd. Once he claimed to have the woman who whistled the "Whistler" theme, but it was actually himself using a bad falsetto.) Frankly I wish they had kept the Sirius hosts and let Bell go.
Also since Radio Spirits started sponsoring the channel and supplying shows, Radio Classics has been repeating shows more often. The commercials for Radio Spirits and Music Rewind have been more frequent than Greg's self-promotion.

Hey I'll take the old radio shows any way I can get them. I always wanted this form of programming in the car!

I agree! However, another reason why I liked the old Sirius Radio Classics channel is that they always put the original air dates of the shows on the display. They seldom do now.

You nailed this on the head. He is so grating. I am glad to have the channel and am old enough to have caught the very tail end of the era!

GreenDigg you're not the only one. What shows, if any, do you remember? I listened in the late '50's and early '60's and remember Arthur Godfrey, Art Linkletter and some soap operas that were still on radio. I also vaguely remember Paul Winchel (the ventriloquist) had a show. We had a big Bendix radio and I used to stare at the dial while imagining the scenes.

Well, the last OTR shows left the air sometime before my 2nd birthday so I don't recall them, but I listened to "Zero Hour" and the "Mystery Theater" in the 70s, and later discovered the older stuff.

Anyway, a few more quibbles with the S/XM Radio Classics channel. The shows seem to be butchered a bit more than usual, probably so they can squeeze in more Radio Spirits/Music Rewind spots. (I especially loathe it when they cut from "Broadway's My Beat" the closing soliloquies offered by Danny Clover. Those musings of a Broadway now long gone have a certain poetry to them and for me they make the show.)
Also, especially now that Radio Spirits is supplying the shows, they could have better source material. I realize that pristine discs and tapes are either hard to come by, gathering dust in a network or sponsor archive, or hoarded by collectors. But many of the shows I hear sound like they come from old "Aston's Adventures" 4-track 3-3/4 ips tapes, with a horrendous amount of print-through and crosstalk, along with third- or fourth-generation dubs. But, as someone else stated, we're lucky to have the shows at all.

I had to chuckle when I saw this on Bell's website, gregbellmedia.com:

"Want Greg's Voice Working for You?
Contact us at AGB Media to find out how Greg Bell's nationally-recognized voice can enhance your next project."

Wonder if anyone took him up on that?
