Radio Consolidation "has prevented me from reaching my potential"- says Jones

Radio Consolidation "has prevented me from reaching my potential"- says Jones

The FCC held talks Monday on radio consolidation, and the country music stars of yesteryear were out in full force telling the board that Radio Consolidation "Has prevented me from reaching my potential" said George Jones. Porter Wagner said if the current rules on country music playlist were around in 1967, the world might not have ever heard of Dolly Parton.

I'm not wanting to start any flame wars just discussion.. but I want opinions from fans, artists (If they read the board), and radio personnel... What are your thoughts on this?

And here is a link to the Tennessean article, where Gerry House of WSIX in Nashville had a 5 minute heated discussion with George Jones' wife on the air about this in a public airing of radio vs. country music:

Re: Radio Consolidation "has prevented me from reaching my potential"- says Jones

I would like to specifically respond to George Jones comment that consolidation prevented him from reaching his full potential. That is just wrong, he had a wonderfu career, he DID reach his full potential. His career slowed down several years BEFORE the telecom bill of 1996. Even if there was no radio consolidation you would not be hearing new George Jones music on the radio. When Jones was at his peak there wasn't current music from artists in their 70s on the radio. It's just the natural order of things and it has nothing to do with consolidation.

If the artists don't like it they can always risk some of their money and buy some stations and play whatever they want. Many of them have no concept of business like Lorrie Morgan who said in Country Weekly a few years ago (and I may be a bit off on the direct quote): "radio should play what we give them." That was when Lorrie did her big band album. Oh yeah, that would go over on country radio. Anyway, if she listened to much of the homemade cr@p we got she would change her mind.

The logic seems to be that we should have one country radio network that feeds every country station in the nation. They all sound alike anyway. Believe me, there are plentyof us who would switch in a minute if we had an alternative. There is a lot of great country music that is being shut out by the big companies.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner.

I love George's stuff, but for him to claim that his failed to reach his potential borders on delusional.

Re: Radio Consolidation "has prevented me from reaching my potential"- says Jone

This viewpoint is more believable if we're talking about newer artists and independents unable to gain airplay. Jones has had a great career. He'd be more credible if he were pointing out how hard it is for up and coming artists to get the airplay he did in his day.
