Radio Coverage of Bankruptcy Filing

How are the stations in Detroit covering the bankruptcy filing of the city? Any special reports or features?

Better yet, How are the ad agencies handling this news. Am sure all the negative publicity is creating a down turn in Regional and Nationl business.

Why should it? Radio spots don't target city government and most consumers - whom spots do target - live outside the city.

Detroits bankruptcy has nothing to do with the earning power and spending habits of the residents in the MSA or TSA.

Are you in even the business?

Never fails. Some small time owner or manager responds to criticism or fair comment by saying - in effect - shut-up, you're not in the business. Ironic, considering how people in the business have completely screwed it up. If radio people are so smart, how come the industry is so addicted to consultants? And how come the industry has seen four decades of consistent decline? Radio is in even worse shape than Detroit. Most blue-chip consumer products advertisers bailed long ago. Same with the industrial advertisers who once used radio to reach decision makers at the major auto companies.

Fred,

You say that blue chip consumer products have abandoned the format a lot. Yet every day I hear ads for major retailers, hotel chains, automobile companies and consumer products that are household names. Radio pulled in $16 billion in aggregate revenue last year. While down from its all time peak, that's still a lot of cabbage.

@nuffsaid,

I have to agree with Fred that the filing likely wouldn't have an impact on ads, as of yet, because most of the population is outside of the city proper. However, it might be insightful to note if there is any impact on the stations that target the demographic predominantly within the city limits. WJLB and WMXD would bear the brunt of any impact in this regard, if indeed such an impact comes to pass.

Why all of the quoting, folks? Honest, we can follow a thread.
Too much space filled with unnecessary quotes is obnoxious.

Hey, being in the business or not in the business doesn't mean crap here! With the deteriation of teh market size and the available spendable income does pose a serious threat to the national and regional dollars for the market. The market has srunk from 2+ million to a around 700,00 - 800,000 and there is a ton of negative national publicity on the city. If the available revenue shrinks or agencies cut back on the dollars being spent the stations will start a feeding frenze to get their "unfair" share of that revenue pool which could affect rates. Just saying!

The market includes the full metropolitan area, which is around 4 million and is pretty stable in terms of population. The city of Detroit is shrinking, but I'm guessing most ad dollars are targeting the suburbs, which are not shrinking.

Not being prideful, Ken.... You need to follow some of Freds nonsense. He is on other boards. We try to ignore him.

I think that for this thread, being in the business is important as the title is "Radio Coverage of Bankruptcy Filing".

Which i said believe has been pretty thoughtful, full of good info and interviews with the proper parties.
