Radio Coverage of Gustav

How 'bout a thread that discusses the coverage of the hurricane?

I'd like to start by excoriating our two main clusters in Lafayette, namely Citadel and Regent Broadcasting. I just scanned the dial and none, I repeat, none of the stations are carrying anything other than routine music formats. Even the NewsTalk formatted KPEL is carrying Dr Dean Edell. Perhaps these stations are doing brief updates but I haven't heard them this evening. Here we are less than 24 hours away from a major hurricane forecast to have its eye right through Lafayette, but its just another day on the radio. I guess they're letting the TV stations do it all. Just pathetic.

I was listening to the streaming version of WWL. I cannot believe how professional they sound. They were taking listener calls, news conferences, network news, and local announcements without missing a beat and without any appearent effort.

When asked how long they would be on, the announcer replied "we will be here unless the towers fall down."

Good work WWL.

WWL coverage is amazing. Citidel seems to be just airing WDSU on their stations, and Clear Channel is running annoucements/weather/traffic updates during their music mixes (without jocks) at least on the two stations I caught (the country one and the Hiphop one) online earler.

EDIT: Q 93.3 appears to be now simulcasting 99.5 FM.

Living up here in Jackson, I can get WWL at night and I have been listening to their coverage. Their hurricane coverage is outstanding, just as it had been with Katrina and with other storms that have threatened the area over the years.

I have been streaming WWL non stop for 36+ hours, even while sleeping. I can't turn it off, they are THAT good! The news, right now, seems to be encouraging. Let us hope it stays that way.

Im listening to the stream of 870 and 690, both doing a great job

The Regent and Citadel stations in Lafayette did redeem themselves today with their hurricane coverage, offering a mix of in-house talent with excerpts from the local TV stations. What they could have done was simulcast their entire clusters of stations for the duration of the storm, just as Entercom did in NOLA.

I know that Entercom has in the past received criticism on this message board on various isssues. Perhaps some of the criticism was justified. But when it comes to their huge effort on Gustav, I think it was unmatched. They simply could not have done it better. They covered it from every angle, they had people everywhere, and they let the callers tell their personal stories on the road. They must have spent a huge amount of money on this effort and I recall hearing little if any advertising. Congratulations to everyone involved.

It's a "given" that CC is going to be bashed....that's the fun of posting! I work for CC in another market and would applaud anyone (owner aside) who has made an effort in coverage. Radio takes some knocks. I applaud those who make the effort and deliver.
