Radio Disney good scores high with Moms and Kids, but WWJZ??

Having kids of "Radio Disney" age. We have listened to it a lot in the last 3-4 years. There are very few, if any, local spots. The main one I recall is from one shopping mall North of Phila., and that is about it. So, it seems as if they aren't trying to make money on the local level... at least not here in Phila.
They have a great daytime signal in New Castle County.

Even so, how many 6-12 year olds get to carry around with them a PPM? So unless mom or dad is with them, in the car, when listening to Radio Disney, who'd know?

Does it really matter how many there are? They take however many they get and, if it's enough for statistical accuracy within tolerances, extrapolate the results over the entire population. Just like they have always done, and just like they do with every other demo.

If they didn't have statistically enough 6-12 year olds, they wouldn't release 6+ ratings.

Whichever 6-12 year olds in NY and Philly are carrying PPMs (whichever ones they are) are not listening to Radio Disney.

Though, I would like to see daypart breakdowns because it's possible that a lot of them are listening but only during short bursts throughout the day, which would explain a low AQH share. 6-12ers are probably not listening to the radio in their rooms like older kids. So, they probably only listen when they're in the car, and they're not in the car for long stretches of time like adults are.

Even the daytime coverage isn’t great. I can get it at home, but I can’t get usuable reception in my car except on limited-access highways and back country roads, where there are no utility poles, industrial buildings or LED traffic lights!

I live about 98 miles west of WWJZ's transmitter but I can get a listenable signal from them during the day (on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the strongest signal WWJZ gets a 2 in my area.)

That station and it's affiliates was always interesting to me. HOW DO THEY MAKE MONEY? The average age is 8-14 and especially in this economy? Who's listening at 10 PM -4 AM in the morning local time? Especially on AM.
The only ananlogy I can use is that most of these Disney stations are in a storage roof studio with a several same company owned AM/FM stations which covers it's rent and package sales deals that keep the local side of things operating. Otherwise , I don't know if Dave Eduardo has an answer for this.

Radio Disney stations are nothing more than a computer, processing and a satellite receiver in a closet.

In indy at one point they where holding about a 0.9 to 1.1 in the book.. Don't know about recent ratings (the RI page shows no data for them --either they dont subscribe or they are not showing up in the book anymore)

The whole Radio Disney empire exists really for one sole purpose.. promoting disney channel, disney parks, disney artists, everything disney!

Of course Radio Disney is one big commercial. The question is the same as with any other commercial: Is anyone hearing it?

I know lots of my daughters' friends were Disney listeners and some still listen even though they are now adults.

Personally, I am very thankful for the role Disney is playing in broadcasting a format that is geared to teens, tweens and young children. Disney acclimates children to listening to radio on a regular basis...

Arbitron hasn't figured a way to really get kids to tell them what stations they listen to. Kids aren't reporting no matter what Arbitron insists. It's the parents & oftentimes we have no clue, just guessing.

When my daughter was about 9 years old she received a letter from a company that requested her to report what candy she ate. After so many months the company would give her a list of prizes to choose from as thanks for her reporting the candy she ate. This continued for aobut a year or two. ... Take a guess who filled out the survey all too often... Me, her dad... Sometimes she would tell me what she ate, other times I would take note of what candy I saw her eating but all in all it was difficult securing the information. Her friends would give her candy at lunch and she might tell me what she ate or she might not... Was the report she sent back to the company accurate. No way.

I think that's a problem in of itself.

I can't see a young boy going anywhere and carrying a PPM meter. Boys will tease him to death with stuff like: "Hey what's that dude, your little electronic purse?"... "Hey look Mikey has to carry his PP meter around because his robot master needs to know what radio stations he's listening too. ".... "Yo dude, if you want my mom to take us to the mall, you're going to have to lose your PP thing. You're not getting in the car with that."

Just a thought.. josh ;)
