RADIO DISNEY IN BOSTON HAS TURNED OFF ITS HD SIGNAL!

Guess what? AM 1260 in Boston-Radio Disney-has turned off its HD signal, allowing me to hear stations from Quincy & Salem, respectively. Guess HD-AM wasn't cut out to be digital.

It could be temporary but we can only hope its permanent. It love to see Radio Disney 1560 from NYC turn off HD. If they were smart they would just get Radio Disney off AM altogether. Its a bad idea in today's age when kids are going to get their music online or at least listen to FM. If Radio Disney really wants to stay on terrestrial radio they should try FM or HD-FM.

I can think of better ways that ABC could use 1560 NYC than for Radio Disney. Moving ESPN Radio to this clear channel would be a good idea since sports is probably one of the few things people still listen to via skywave, at least in nearby markets without a local sports station or a daytime one.

Per RadioLocator, the coverage maps for WEPN and WQEW are similar in pattern, but 1050 has a somewhat stronger signal overall than 1560. Given the frequencies, that is to be expected. Neither station will outdo WFAN for signal strength.

Plus, why would Disney want to move ESPN Radio to a dial position even further away from the other big NYC stations than they are now?

Yeah, I've sometimes wondered that about Radio Disney too. Doesn't make much sense to put kid's radio programming on "that band their grandparents listen to". Unless Disney's trying to draw future generations to the mind-numbing drivel known as "commercial talk radio".

To me, RD has always struck me as being perfect VHF IBAC subchannel material! But that brings up the question of "would they be able to get away with it given the (allegedly) non-commercial nature of subchannels?" Radio Disney plays commercials, in fact when you think about it, Radio Disney is just one big, continuous commercial for Disney itself!

(Hey, guess what I just noticed? This is my 600th post on this server! ;o)

There's a thread on the Coast-to-Coast board about RD.

I wish RD would turn off HD on ALL of their AM's! RD engineers and management, are you listening? You can't get any listeners to HD AM on your weak AM signals!! And the HD hiss and narrowband signal makes your audio sound like crap!

If they would turn off the hiss, I'd be a listener again!

That's good news to me, I listen to WARE 1250 out of Ware MA sometimes and 1560's IBOC hash had sometimes interfered with WARE on 1250 even though both are weak, I live approximately in the middle. It's probably too good to be true though another AM IBOC that's close to me is off and on all the time.

Radio Disney is a marketing ploy by the Disney company... it does not necessarily have to stand on its own, because it supports the brand. It's tageted at pre-teens in the 6-11 age range and it's marketed to parents as being as safe as the Disney name itself, while the open internet generally frightens the parents of pre-teens. Disney gets brand exposure... and nationally it's in the millions... which is the purpose. Think of it as a billboard o some othe type of advertising, not as a radio station.

It would make sense that the 1050 signal does better in the city and the surrounding areas. And appealing to skywave listeners is not profitable for stations today. So thats really all they should care about. But since 1050 isn't a clear channel you get skywave interference from CHUM at night which makes 1560 seem like the better signal. But if CHUM weren't on 1050 it would probably come it just as good if not better than 1560 via skywave, since 1560 doesn't do nearly as well as WFAN, WABC or WCBS.

Speaking of HD Radio in the Boston Market, WJMN's HD-1 signal and analog signal are out of sync by about two seconds.

Brain Beezley (who maintains an excellent website) checks HD time delay and level alignment of southern California stations on a regular basis. His latest update at the bottom of this page shows only six (highlighted in blue) that meet the spec:

How many years has it been since this system was developed??? - and it's still not stable.

I sent an e-mail to KUSC a while back tellling them that their HD signal was out of sync. I got an e-mail back that said "we will get right on that" and shortly the signals were back in sync again. Somebody does really care.

Radio Disney is LA and in Chicago and Grand Rapids all ran C-Quam AM stereo - and the audio was pretty decent - worked great long distances at night too without disturbing their neighbors on the radio band either!
Actually, I'm glad that RD is on AM as it gets parents used to pushing the AM button on their radio, so Long Live AM!
Love to hear stereo on 1560 NYC again too!
