Radio Disney on 550 am

Does the mouse actually make money here? You can get Radio Disney on Sirius/XM and possibly other places.
ABC/Citadel still has to shell out money for ascap/bmi.So why not put "True Oldies on 550 am so at least they can make some petty cash by having some sort of spots. With Disney are there any local spots at all? With the station doing TRU OLDIES the enginer may have a few bucks to make a run here and there to dunkin donuts.

Citadel no longer has anything to do with Disney, so there's not really any connection to the True Oldies Channel. Maybe they could put ESPN Radio on there? Disney doesn't seem to own many medium market ESPN stations though, as I think the smallest is Pittsburgh.

How long has that been like that? I thought ABC,Disney and Citadel were all under the same roof.

With the increase in listening from sources like internet streaming and satellite radio......is it even worth it for Disney to maintain a network of terrestrial stations, many of which are not even close to being the "cream" of thier markets, signal-wise.

Just wondering...(for any armchair brokers out there)...Just how much could a property like 550 fetch the Mouse in this current market, anyway?

Given that the transmitter site is on wetlands and there is zero possibility of any power increase/more complex directional array....plus there no longer being an on-site studio facility (is the current off-site studio rented?)...then I'd guess MAYBE $350,000 but only if somebody with bucks wanted a nice little hobby. A shame since it was worth closer to $2,500,000. If I remember right, the towers (fairly tall) are tube stock and MAY be close to needing to be replaced, something which would be impossible in today's extreme environmental climate. Of course maintenance may have been really good, in which case they could last another 30-50 years. IF AM lasts that long.

I think Radio Disney is fine on 550 AM, since it has a massive signal. I can sometimes get 550 better than I get 1260 AM, the Boston Radio Disney affiliate.

Radio Disney would do better if it were on FM. How many people under 20 even listen to AM Radio? Not many. The kids out there who would love it, don't even know that it exists.

My guess is that kids DO know about Radio Disney, but are more likely to be listening online or by way of satellite radio, rather than conventional FM, or......horror of horrors......"ANCIENT MODULATION".

Kids know about Radio Disney, it is advertised and promo'ed ad nauseum on the Disney Channel, Toon Disney & Disney XD

Show me a 50-kW FM that has coverage equivalent to that of Disney-550 with its' 1 (one) kiloWatt.

Ya can't.

Maybe there aren't many listening but it sure makes it possible for a gigantic population to listen - if it had popularly appealing programming.

Is it one of those generic national ads where they don't tell anybody where to tune in locally? My guess is that kids may know of Radio Disney then, but they probably say "I WISH I COULD GET THAT". (not realizing that they actually can).

I have three kids (9, 6, and 5). They are in the habit of listening to 550 because I stumbled across it one day. They don't care about the audio quality, just the music. My guess is that the corporation looks at it as a low-cost advertisement for its products. Kids buy the music off Itunes, and the assorted DVDs/Blu-Rays. Since the overhead is basically powering the station, it makes them money when all is considered.

They get directed to Radio Disney.com which has station locator on it and they are out in force at the malls and kid events during the year. Believe me, having an 8 & 11 year old, they know what it is....and you wonder how Hilary Duff, Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers got so big!
Former Fun 107 & Kix 106 BB Good was one of their main DJ's up until 2008

Radio Disney 550 sounds great in HD! The station doesn't need to make any ratings as it serves as a promotional tool for the Disney empire. Believe it or not, they probably do more local remotes then any other Providence station.
