Radio Disney on FM

They're on FM in Indianapolis, Little Rock, and Cumberland, MD. They also used to be on FM in Mobile and Syracuse. The RD station in Phoenix AZ is on AM 1580 - there has never been a Radio Disney FM station in Arizona.

All the Radio Disney stations in Latin America are FM, I believe.

RD is used by owners trying to keep AM stations from going dark. It's hard to imagine the rationale for flipping a viable FM to a format that won't deliver the sales demos.

And apparently it's not working. The Mickey Mouse Outfit has turned off five Radio Disney transmitters this year, all pending a sale. Their stations in Albuquerque, Tulsa, Norfolk, West Palm Beach, and Greensboro NC are (for the time being) off the air. My guess is that many more will follow. Maybe they're finally sick of paying big bucks for electricity, property taxes, and transmitter maintenance, with next to nothing in return.

Doesn't look like Disney is trying to move any of their RD stations to FM, as opposed to their ESPN Radio outlets (especially New York and possibly Chicago) which are looking for FM homes. I wonder how much longer the network will exist as a broadcast entity since kids have no idea what an AM radio is.

How is RD doing in the Rating's??

I would think it would do better on FM, Sounds Better..But AM I like

You need to check the market-by-market ratings to see the answer to your question...but it's not a monster anywhere...even with the switch to measuring 6+ instead of 12+.

Moving it to FM would have the unintended consequence of moving Radio Disney's exclusive audience, which can't find anything else they like on AM, to a band with other music and stations they'd like...a large number of their listeners would probably become CHR listeners fairly quickly.

My daughter liked Radio Disney when she was about 8 years old. At the time, she didn't know the difference between AM and FM, and didn't care about the difference in fidelity between the 2 bands. In the Bay Area, Disney is on low-powered and staticky 1310 AM, though it does have clever call letters (KMKY).

By the time she was TEN, she had already moved on to FM CHR stations, like Wild 94.9 (KYLD). She got an i-pod at about age 12, and radio has been almost totally irrelevant to her since then. Now, at 14, she finds out about new music from friends, and the internet, and downloads them from i-tunes. As long as she keeps it under $10 per month, I don't have a problem with it. Most months, she spends less than that.

If my daughter is typical, wasting a valuable FM frequency on Radio Disney would be a fool's errand.

I live an an outer Suburb of San Francisco where Radio Disney sounds about the same on 1310 San Francisco and 1470 Sacramento. I spent a lot of listening from age 8-10 and after ten I simply moved on to the FM CHRs. I still tune in ever now and then, but just to laugh at the music. I think it be pretty silly to blow up a good music FM to run a Network that seldom shows up in the books, unless of course the FM is about to go silent.

Lkeller, Your Daughter's story is typical, and most teens usually only listen to the radio in the car now

Neither do some of us old geezers. I'm 55 and rarely have a radio on at home anymore. 95% of my listening outside the car is online. The KJZZ blues show on Sunday nights and the occasional Diamondbacks or Suns game on KTAR are pretty much the only exceptions.

Still stuck with old-fashioned radio while driving, though.

The Mickey Mouse Outfit is dropping its money-bleeding sports format and putting RD on AM 1250 in Pittsburgh as of January 1. Signal problems and competition from KDKA-FM are the main reasons for the switch. Disney's current LMA with another Pittsburgh station expires at the end of the year.

At the same time, they're taking their RD AM stations in Hartford, Providence, and Jacksonville dark until a buyer is found. Since 1250 has been for sale for awhile, don't be surprised if Disney shuts them down as well if a buyer isn't found. They haven't found one yet, and the electric bill for a 5000 watt transmitter ain't peanuts.

If ABC/Disney is looking to move their O&O ESPN Radio format to the FM, then they were foolish for selling off WLS-FM in Chicago, as that was ABC's only FM station in Chicago. ABC/Disney chose to retain 1300 WRDZ & 1000 WMVP. They sold WLS-AM & FM to Citadel. Citadel isn't likely to sell those stations back to ABC/Disney since they now are in a top 3 market, along with markets 1 & 2. Radio Disney is on a weak signal. It can be heard in most of the Chicago market during the day, but at night, it's mainly heard in just Cook County Illinois.

Reply to ddsparxx's post about Spokane's 107.1
107.1 wasn't Radio Disney. It was another children's network called Radio AAHS, very similar to Radio Disney.

They didn't *sell* the stations to Citadel. If I recall right, Citadel was only charged with the duties of managing the stations at the local level. This is different from an outright sale.

As such, if Citadel really wanted to, they could conceivably move WMVP to 94.7. But the bigger question I think is WOULD they? Another question is can they do it without compromising the local coverage the station currently enjoys on AM 1000?

Just because WMVP is ESPN Radio in Chicago doesn't mean it can be moved anywhere on the dial just so a few scant listeners who prefer AM over FM can listen to it on FM. Besides, it's not like ESPN doesn't have competition from two other networks who also want the same thing ya know ;)

Cheers :D

You recall incorrectly, Pat...ABC/Disney did indeed sell its stations outright to Citadel. While WLS AM-FM remain in the ABC building at 190 N. State Street, they're now just tenants and will probably move elsewhere when their lease is up. In most of ABC Radio's other markets, the Disney and ESPN stations have already moved out; in Los Angeles, for instance, KDIS moved from the KABC/KLOS building in Culver City to new studios next to the Staples Center downtown.

(WMVP, interestingly, is a tenant in the WLS building as well; ABC Radio pays rent to ABC-TV, which controls the building. WLS and WLS-FM occupy two of the top floors there, with WMVP on a separate floor.)

So, no, Citadel can't move WMVP to 94.7. It's not theirs to move.
