Radio Disney to sell 1260

What do you think they could get for a stand alone am in boston? (Btw.... For those that complain about WRKO and WEEI-am signal...1260am is even more inferior that that....barely covering inside 128 at night.)

Prob not much..S Fybush was wondering on FB if
Salem might take 1260 back and run their talk show but
would it be worth it? Might it be grabbed by CC, Ent.,
CBS, Cumulus or Greater? Prob not...
Ethnic, leased, donate to non profit or public radio
(Why?)..how about something for minority comm.
(tho we do have black owned, low volume WILD
but that's leased to China Radio.

Jeff Santos? Could he afford to buy rather than lease...
Any other guesses?

Other than in LA, that Mickey Mouse
operation to sell Radio Disney stations
incl 1260 Boston, 1560 NY, 1260 Cle.,
1250 Pitt etc

23 of their 24 O&O stations are for sell...the Dallas station KMKI was looking for a new Chief in the last couple of months..bet whoever took that is wishing they hadnt now.....new owner will probably let them go or reduce their pay by a lot....

Wonder if it's not sold by 9/26, it could go dark and provide a new home for pirates.
So Radio Disney, a survey found, was heard on ter. radio by 18 per cent of its listeners. For that 18 per cent it will require either smartphones (most have 'em anyway, but some data plans limit usage and after a point can sloooooooooow down) or sat. radio, so a need to "pay" for it. Or listen on comp., which already is being paid for..

Someone

What some company should do, (Clear Channel, CBS, Entercom, Greater Media)etc... What they should do is put (The Touch) Westwoodone.com (on top, put your mouse on "Programming", choose "Formats", choose "Urban-R&B", and choose "The Touch"
The Touch is the best Urban AC format like I've never heard
That would be a great option.
And if not that, create a Talk Format, like some of you suggested

The key question now becomes -0 what format does the buyer put on it. The brokered time market in the Boston area is saturated. My guess is that any buyer for their station would already have another property in the metro area. They would then look to combine programming on several smaller stations in order to cover the entire metro.

Why would anyone want to be an AM pirate?

Tell that to the folks on 540, 720, 1610, 1620
etc up to 1710. They don't mind AM. Including
the ones up nr the intersection of 93 and 495
awhile back that interfered with road construction
info. By rights the only legal station past 1600
in Boston should be the Logan parking info on
1650.

The brokered time format is NOT saturated in Boston. If new owners of 1260 were to offer good rates, and guarantees of stability, watch them come! If the market was saturated there would be no or few pirates on AM & FM.

Tweets from David Field of Entercom: "Let's keep it real: Disney recently paid $100+ mil to put ESPN on FM in NYC & just made big commitment to ABC News on am/fm....,..They cut Radio Disney stations because people under 75 don't listen to music on am."

Hi Laurojm.

I find it hard to believe that there's much overlap between the pirate crowd and brokered programmers. The pirates get to play on FM 24 hours a day, who's going to buy some hours on an AM?

Pirates get to play till they're caught at least (the folks who got TOUCH-ed by the FCC, for example). FM more desirable yes though there are still some AM pirates out there, even perhaps at night. I'd prefer some of these fledgling broadcasters to buy time on existing stations rather than go pirate. (Just as I'd said before, we have some Spanish language programming on WMWM on Saturdays and I'd much rather have them do that than try to go the pirate route...yeah we're non commercial
but you get the idea).

Great Eric Rhoads article on the fate of broadcasting both AM and FM..predictions coming true

http://www.radioink.com/article.asp?id=2827419&spid=24698
>> ERIC RHOADS: "One of the world's giant media companies is saying we no longer need AM and FM stations because our listeners are digital.
Ouch. This is the first time in history where there is actual action from a radio broadcasting company to remove AM and FM from their distribution. It's the first sell-off of AM/FM properties because their listeners are digital."

They aren't pirates they are 10 watt TIS stations that are licensed under Part 90 of the FCC rules.

Well I wasn't lumping the likes of 1640 Peabody in with the pirates. I said the only stations above 1600 in the immediate area that are legal are ones like 1640 Peabody or 1650 Logan parking info...or things like the 1640 in downtown Lynnfield, announcements from a church and school (goes a few blocks). Those are not breaking the law but the several above
1600 that are not licensed, are.
Examples from http://bamlog.com/bostonlp2013.htm

>1620 Radio Energy, French/Haitian www.radioenergyboston.com
1620 Radio Liberte, French/Haitian
1680 Radio Voix du Salut, French/Haitian Religion radiovoixdusalut.org

1710 Radio Celestial (Bronx NY), Spanish Religion www.smjrc.com
1720 Pirate Radio Boston, irregular schedule, rock music

Rhoads calls Disney a radio broadcasting company, but I don't think he's necessarily right. Disney is an entertainment company. The Radio Disney properties have always been a secondary brand extension, which is why it isn't so surprising to see them get out.

They bought AM instead of FM because it was cheaper... But kids weren't flocking to their AM stations 20 years ago either... It's just a little worse now, and their alternative delivery methods are more effective.

I really don't see this as a "radio broadcasting company rejecting AM/FM." Radio Broadcasting companies include Clear Channel, Cumulus, and Greater Media, but not the marketing department at Disney.

What some company should do, (Clear Channel, CBS, Entercom, Greater Media)etc... What they should do is put (The Touch)

Lauros suggestion that some GREAT radio company SHOULD put the syndicated touch format on because Lauro likes it! :)

Under these circumstances...it just might not be a bad idea!

Got a suggetion as what to do with 1260.
Rent the window space at the flat iron end of the Statler Office Building in Park Square and put a studio there in the window.
Format ...sort of WJIB with easy music. Ah, even have the call letters "WEZE...easy as the breeze". Hire young talent and maybe even an up and coming stand up comic who will hopefully take the news car to New York City on the weekend for a gig and you will have the next George Carlin.....!
