Radio Disney

OK, Radio Disney has been around for longer than I expected. Since most of the stations are on AM I can't believe that younger kids actually listen to it, especially with FM Top 40 and Hip-Hop/R&B choices available. Maybe some kids decided to see what was on the AM band, found it, and told others. How do they deal with the duller sound and static? I wonder how many stay tuned during a thunderstorm. I would guess great advertising has something to do with it. Who knows? Can anyone explain?

Beats me. Kids generally hate AM Radio to begin with. I can't even imagine many listen. I never see Radio Disney in the Ratings either. Maybe I overlook it. In any event they are probably just like the little local community radio stations that can barely keep their head above water. The Radio Disney affiliates are probably stuck in a long term contract.

Radio Disney is huge in the tween market. It's really the only thing geared for that age group. Parents don't want the 8-11 year olds listening to rap crap. radio disney is safe and fun and also interactive, the kids love listening to the code word of the day and then logging on to try to win prizes.

As a parent, I am greatful for Radio Disney.

When your target is 8-11, and Arbitron only surveys listeners 12+, plus you're on an AM, you're not likely to see any big numbers. KDIS-FM in Little Rock seems to pull in the mid-1's in 12+ ratings; not too bad when you consider the demo, though these numbers likely include parents in the car listening with kids. Radio Disney affiliates actually don't bill too badly, the affiliates' revenues were reported in Billboard Radio Monitor at one point; I seem to recall seeing that both WDDZ and WMKI did decently considering signal strength... both were under $1m IIRC.

Is WDDZ 550 stuck in a long-term contract? Of course not, they're an ABC Radio O&O. And Radio Disney is the most consistant format that's been on the frequency in years, compared to such flukes as the business-formatted WPNW and the Mancow-anchored "550 The Buzz", so I wouldn't expect to see it go anywhere soon.
