Radio documentary coming to San Diego February 1st

Hey all, my name is R Dub and I work for Jammin' Z90 and Magic 92.5.

In 2011 I produced and directed my first film, which was a documentary about a ground-breaking AM Hip-Hop radio station in Arizona. It really was an ode to the station's amazing staff, that made incredible things happen with no budget and a signal just as limited! Despite its success, the station went away one day with no warning to its listeners--this was before social media and the internet--and for years the entire community was left guessing why their favorite station simply up and disappeared. I felt we owed our listeners the real story, and a proper goodbye, thus, the reason for making the film.

Now, the reason for my posting...

I'm humbled that the film has been chosen as an official selection of The San Diego Black Film Festival and will be shown at Reading Cinemas Gaslamp 15 on Friday, February 1st at 8PM, as part of the 4-day film fest.

I would like to invite you out to the showing, as fellow broadcasters, and would be thrilled if you can make it out to see the movie and enjoy some radio history. You may even see some people you know in the film; even a few San Diego radio professionals including my friend Chris Patyk who is the PD at KEGY (He has a very prominent role in the story and film!) Please say hello if you come.

You can see the movie's trailer here: http://www.power1490.com

And info on the screening and festival here: http://sdbff.com/festival-at-a-glance_friday.html

Thanks and warm regards,

R

I could pick up KUKQ 1060 from Mesa, Arizona that had a similar format like 1580 KDAY. So Power 1490 wasn't the first station in Arizona to air Hip Hop music in the state. Not so ground-breaking as they try to seem!

I remember in the early 90s, when I was at SDSU and living in Del Cerro, I actually picked up Power 1490 a couple of times. I always liked those Churban desert stations, like Q-96 at the time in El Centro, that weren't afraid to mix some slow jams and even a little bit of Old School with the new stuff. They were always on the fringes of the hit music stations but every now and then could reach back 10, even 20 years to just play some good music.

It was an awesome station and amazing to be a part of it all! A lot of superstars came out of that building including (but not limited to) Stryker (KROQ), Bruce St. James (KPWR), Chris Wilcox (XHRM), Chris Patyk (KEGY), etc.

A lot of San Diego radio people will be at the screening, should be a fun event!

Except KUKQ Tempe never played Hip Hop. By the time Hip Hop was a thing, KQ had gone country.

Fun fact: KUKQ once had the call sign KKKQ, until someone pointed out that a R&B station probably shouldn't ID themselves as K-K-K-anything.

Back to Tucson: "Po-Power 1490. You want to hear us in stereo? Strap two radios to your head!"

Wow, johndavis...you remembered that sweeper!!!

Our imaging (Bumper Morgan) was awesome...and funny! Some of the best imaging were the sweepers that called out and poked fun at the big dog in town (KRQ). In fact, one of the segments in the movie is exclusively dedicated to those sweepers and some of the breaks and "stunts" pulled by the Power 1490 jocks in an attempt to take away credibility from KRQ. I hope you will get a kick out of those...thank God we saved them and were able to put them in the film. My hoarding finally paid off!

By the way, showtime changed to 6PM and a facebook invite/RSVP can be found here:

Hey, this is tonight! And they changed the time to 6PM! Hope you can make it!

Where, in his post or elsewhere, did R-Dub claim that Power 1490 was the first station in the state to play hip-hop?

Power 1490 is memorable because it was a hip-hop-friendly Rhythmic CHR on the AM dial that caused the (Tucson) market's 100kW heritage Mainstream CHR to get its panties in a bunch.

If you watch the movie trailer, you'll see the black gentleman comment about how they (Power 1490) first played hip-hop "probably in the entire state."

I find it hard to believe a Tucson station beat out a station from a much larger metropolis to the north (Phoenix) to be first to play hip-hop!

Ps. Rdub if you are reading this, don't worry I'll probably order the movie after the festivals are over with!

Songs remembered from P-Power 1490: Creep b/TLC, Chocolate b/Y?NVee

I suspect the movie is bigger than the station actually was. As RDub said elsewhere about the film, "the film is less about ratings "facts," and more about the "heart" that the station had..."

Does anyone know what they actually did in the ratings then?

I'm not sure if this counts, but I'm pretty the legendary KZZP/Phoenix had hip-hop in rotation in the mid to late 80's...when most other Mainstream CHRs in the country would not dare to do so.

Sorry moderators, I know this topic is drifting further away from having anything to do with San Diego radio!

radio-darn: Our biggest victory was beating KRQ in teens. That was a HUGE deal for us, and I remember the day it happened. It was huge. You gotta think about it...KRQ was a POWERHOUSE in the 80s/90s...so for an AM station to come along and beat them, albeit in the teen demo...that was AMAZING!!! We also served up heavy competition 18-34 and 18-24.

You really should see the movie. Credit goes to Bruce St. James and the whole staff who made it happen!
