Radio Edits in the 80's...?

Did anyone ever play the single edit of Bob Seger's "Against the Wind" back when it was a hit? I don't recall ever hearing the edit played back then, only hearing it occasionally (and usually only on AC stations even then) in recent years. I'm thinking that since it was NOT the leadoff single from that album, that maybe the album version was already "out there," even if only on the album itself up to that point, and that stations HAD to play the LP cut, even after it became a single, because the single itself would have sounded too "chopped up" to the ears of most listeners by then.

ZZ Top's "Legs" had two different mixes. One had a more intense guitar track.

The heavier guitar is the album version. The one with more synth in the intro is the single/video version. The vocals are also remixed slightly in the single to add harmony at some spots (and to bury the "s-it I've got to have her" line deeper in the mix).

I remember KZZP Phoenix creating a version of Tears for Fears "Head Over Heels" by shortening the track "Broken" that precedes the song on the album (and features part of the Head Over Heels melody and lyrics), then rolling into the song, wrapping it up with the reprise of Broken that follows the song on the album. They also played a great remix edit of Everybody Wants To Rule The World. They frequently would edit remixes to fight off burn on titles that wouldn't quite fall of the charts. I ended up re-creating the edit of Broken/Head Over Heels/Broken for my own collection because that's how I remember listening to the song.

These days, "Legs" is almost always heard with these 3 notes that repeat throughout the song. It never used to be played this way.

Even the AOR stations played the single mix of Legs back in the day, probably because that's what MTV played.

UB40's RRW was re-issued in the late 80s and my 45 RPM is that version. It does have the "RRW you make me feel so fine" section.

R

But the 45 that was out before radio brought it back faded like the video did. I worked at the station that did the bring-back and played the original single at a gig before it was reissued (because it was all I owned)...and got stuff thrown at me because it faded early.

I love the story behind why that song got brought back. We were doing a contest where you had to identify the first song and last song in the sweep to win and the MD was sick of the same people winning, so he carted it up to throw the prize pigs off. Then people kept calling for it. The rest is history.
