RADIO ENERGY REBRANDS TO NRJ

Astral Media which brought Virgin Radio to Canada in 2008 has made a similar agreement with the NRJ group in France to rebrand all its french language Radio Energy stations in Quebec to NRJ on August 24th:

Besides CKMF 94.3 in Montreal and CHIK 98.9 in Quebec City, the new NRJ stations will also be launched in Drummondville, Gatineau, Rimouski, Rouyn Noranda, Saguenay, Sherbrooke, Trois Rivieres, and Val D'Or.

Also in Quebec CHEQ 101.3 in Sainte Marie received approval today to relocate to 101.5 and increase power from 4,677 watts to 26,000 watts (100,000 watts Max. ERP). This will enable them to expand their french language Country format into the Quebec City region:

If they follow the NRJ format from France they should do alright. I listened to NRJ while in France this summer and they played a good mix of music including French and English artists.

At least NRJ is still operating in France, unlike Virgin which has left the British airwaves.

I too recall NRJ in France, but I remember more fondly getting Virgin's MW signal from over the Channel while living in The Netherlands. I believe Virgin was a bit of a pioneer, opening up the way for commercial radio in the UK.

What I want to know is this: ¿Are the listeners REALLY going to notice any change? I have energie 104.1 here, which as far as I'm concerned is a decent CHR station. NRJ in French sounds just like the word Energy anyway. As far as a rebrand, the listeners won't hear any difference. Unless it's a tweak in format, I highly doubt listeners are even going to notice. I don't follow how the stations are doing in the rest of Quebec, but here in the Ottawa Franco ratings, they do very well. Even some of the Anlgos prefer it to hot 89.9, as that station is seen as to "juvenile". Energie 104.1 can at least keep a rocker like me curious enough to tune in once and a while and get rewarded with some of the best Alternative rock songs you don't expect to be slipped in on a CHR. I applaud them for being one of the most diverse top 40's I've heard in many years.

No mimo, I don't expect most listeners to notice the change. Has there been a change at 'The Bear', now that it's Virgin 1069 (I can't tell the difference, but I've never been a big listener to The Bear)? Basically a rebranding, I would think...although stations do change their formats like 3 day old under-wear, don't they? Even the CBC Radio 2 are trying to reinvent them-selves...they've now become Canada's national 'alt-country' station, IMHO.

Speaking of Alt, have you given CFTX 96.5 a go? It's the Francophone 'active rock' station...I can't get it down here, but I have been known to crank it when I'm in town. ;D

I've been listening to CFTX since the flip to rock, and seriously, it's replaced live 88.5 as my favourite station. I still like Live, but I'm really loving 96.5. I can't speak French, but I don't mind the blocks of French rock/alternative. Some of it sounds great. They might be what finally makes me learn French. I think they are what the Bear SHOULD have been. Speaking of them, I do notice a huge difference since they became Virgin. Much more classic rock. I've since removed it from the presets of my radio. But the rare times I tune in, I notice a lot of listener interaction/input. I'll give them credit for that. Radio needs to have listeners who feel something for the station they listen to, and Virgin has done great with keeping it's listeners as an integral part of the station.

Back to the oringina subject...Energie. To me, they remind me a bit of the old AM top 40's in the early to mid 80's, when they played everything that was a hit. There was a huge ammount of cross-over. Energie does touch many different genres of music. As I posted in the "review of the Ottawa radio dial" thread. If I were forced to listen to a CHR, it would be NRJ.

Since 96.5 TAG change their formats from CHR to Active Rock. I notice that their owner (Radio-Nord) has regionalwide branding of Planete (adult contemporary) and X (Modern Rock). I guess it must be a Quebec thing to brand their radios province wide.

BTW, I used to live in Montreal and I do understand French and also, I speak at least four languages.

Is the pronounciation of "Energie" EXACTLY the same as the french pronounciation of "NRJ" or is there a slight difference?

Yes, certainly close enough and its use has to be the intent. I haven't come across an official explanation for the acronym, however the initials could stand for 'Nouveau Radio Jeunesse'.

I've listened to the (trilingual) Lebanese stream, off and on, for quite some time and even the English announcers use the term 'energie', as opposed to the EN-ARE-JAY anglo make up of the initials.
