Radio Equalizer, BOSTON.COM: DePetro fired

"TBA" weekdays 9-noon

Fineburg filling in for him right now (as it is, Todd's nighttime show is prob not on tonight as I believe the Celts are playing)--Radio Equalizer noted DePetro's theme music was not being used...Either he's gone or they've
removed references temporarily while a "meeting" goes on over on Guest St.

via radio equalizer: 10:14 am

EXCLUSIVE - CONFIRMED: DePetro has been fired, along with his board operator as well. Name removed from website.

Remember ya heard it here first (puts Drudge-style hat on...)

Re: Radio Equalizer: DePetro fired

EXCELLENT. It took them long enough.

The man was a disgrace. His ratings reflected it. Entercom should never have hired him, should never have kept him this long, should never have allowed him to pollute the airwaves with anti-gay, anti-weight, slurs and stupidity.

Maybe he can be a garbage collector in Rhode Island because he issued garbage here in Massachusetts.

According to Boloney, he was fired for comments towards Grace Ross?

I saw the comments, and they were flattering to say the least. Depetro should be given a promotion, not a suspension.

Score another win for the Pink Mafia and another loss for the rest of society.

Maybe Johnny D will get a job over at WQHG-FM Talk in Quahog, RI, replacing "The Dingo and The Baby"
(Brian and Stewie Griffin) (see recent Family Guy episode...Pee-tah Griffin's dog and young son do a talk
show on a local FM talker...)

Someone on Free Republic said he wondered if Howie would talk about this today...I replied I doubt it as management probably wants him to avoid any reference (and if someone does ask he can just say
"no comment"). Surely promos, etc. will be re-edited (like the one I heard last night AFTER the news
about the "suspension" came out..."with the personalities to back it up--your home for Scott
Allen Miller, John DePetro, etc.")

You say so. I enjoyed his show. He didn't say anything that a large majority of the rational public doesn't say all the time.

You "enjoyed" his show? First time I've seen DePetro's name and entertainment in the same sentence.

There goes what little credibility you had left. The show as AWFUL!

Herald also reports the DePetro firing (not much other details, just that he's been fired)

'RKO site does still mention him in one way: via the Podzinger podcast files. Also they have a link to
"news headlines from the Herald" and the first one is DePetro firing. A statement is supposed to be
released by Entercom eventually

I do did enjoy it.

I've said it before, though, that as a radio personality, I couldn't stand the way he obviously stood way too close to the mic and all you could hear was lip smacking. If I didn't see a mic cover in the WRKO pics I would assume they didn't even have one.

The problem is that, in the context of the race for governor, his remarks were ad hominem attacks and weren't speaking to the issues of the campaign. I have a feeling that's why he was fired. He was suspended and warned over the summer for calling Matt Amorello the three-letter f-word (and I don't mean "fat"), so it's not the first time he crossed that line. The problem with DePetro is that he can be quite good at talk radio, when he leaves the ad hominem attacks at home and really tries hard, but he has this unrestrained need to call people names when it's not relevant to the discussion, and that's what got him in trouble. Name-calling is the last refuge of someone without a legitimate argument to make, and that's not good talk radio...that's two four-year-olds in a sandbox arguing over who gets to shovel the dirt and who gets to play with the Tonka truck.

Score another win against prejudice and another loss for the cause of bigotry.

It was lead story on Ch 5 noon news; Ch 4 next came in, and finally Ch 7 (flipped back and forth). It was said that the tone of DePetro's voice in saying the comments may also have been a factor and that Entercom's
bigwigs were furious. Also mentioned that he was given a warning before for the Amorello comment (along with THAT suspension) and that was also a factor in the firing.

WPRI-TV Channel 12 reported about DePetro's firing on their noon newscast. Why did WRKO fire the board op too? The board op didn't make the comments about Grace Ross. DePetro did.

...and DePetro would have fired him for dumping out. No winn situation for that kid. Too bad.

The board op was collateral damage, a scapegoat. I'm sure the thinking at Entercom (officially) went something like We sign your paycheck, you should have known not to let that comment out on our air. The poor kid's probably afraid of crossing the host for something like that. After all, while it was grossly bad taste, it was not illegal.

ONLY if DePetro was his employer. If WRKO was his employer, DePetro would have had nothing to say about it.

Bottom line, of course, is if the board op had hit the dump button DePetro would probably still be employed there.

Do you really think the host of a show couldn't have a board op fired off his show no matter who signed the check?

either right before or right after the 5 PM break on friday, Howie said there were many chump line calls about the changes at the Boston affiliate, and they had all ended up on the cutting room floor.

I'm sure Julie and Friends had a gag order out on the subject.
