Radio Format Question

Has there ever been a terrestrial radio station that play today's and/or yesterday's hits and indie music? If so, how successful was it?

It's pretty common in the non-commercial world. WXPN Philadelphia is a great example.

They did a big 50th anniversary for Woodstock, plus they play lots of current indie music.

"Indie" is a marketing term related to small labels and independent productions, and, while it has been given some kind of mystique among certain listeners, it is still about whether a song has appeal.

As BigA said, the preponderance of "indie" play is on non-com stations which can be more adventurous. And, indeed, a few of the indie songs played there make it to more mainstream stations but the bulk of the music has to narrow an appeal or is just not up to the mass appeal standards of commercial stations.

Add in the gradual decline of rock in our rhythmic age, and you have the major reasons why indie music is not on many commercial stations.

I also play a bunch on the indie singers and songwriters too. These musicians are the backbone for this LPFM radio station. I like the way they present their music. No suit and tie to tell them how they should present their product. They do what they think works best for them and it works well. Glad that the LPFM radio spectrum was created. It gives a true voice for those that otherwise wouldn't be heard on most radio stations.
