Radio Free Phoenix gets Best of Phoenix

BEST INTERNET RADIO STATION (2007)

[EDIT]

Welcome to Radio Free Phoenix, an Internet station that plays everything from New Wave to blues to folk to psychedelic jams (and a bunch of amalgamations in between), spanning the '60s through today. Where corporate-owned radio stations use a computer program called Selector to determine their playlists (based on time, genre, and even gender limitations), Radio Free Phoenix's DJs actually choose the music they play. [EDIT]

Hats of to Andy and Liz and the gang at RFP, great radio, good music and good people!

Uh, maybe that's why it was awarded Best Internet Station.

The Phoenix New Times Best of Phoenix awards in other catagories are:

Jonathan L- Best Radio DJ
KMLE- Best Country
Da' Nutz- Best Morning Talk Show(?)
Gambo- Best Morning Sports

News Times Best of Phoenix awards used to be quite prestigious. Just back in the market, so I'm assuming they still are.

(loveable Jay, we'll meet up at the big stick and swap KJJJ stories when it cools down)

Not all stations use Selector. I know of at least 8 stations here in PHX that use Prophet. New Times needs to do its homework before it definitively publishes something as fact.

Radio Free Phoenix is great. wish it were on the airwaves.

I wish it were over the air too.

RFP is different because the people running it are doing it because they love the music.

Its not some corporate, overly tested, ultra safe dreck that infects all the other music stations.

Its true.

And they have a cat named Condello (And a Condello named Cat(nazero)

By reading their website, looks like radiofreephoenix.com has it's roots in Bill Compton's original KDKB. They have a nice tribute to my former rival from Tyler Texas....

Would a station like radiofreephoenix.com be feasable on today's KDKB?

Yes, Dwight Tindle's contribution to KDKB has been mentioned on a Radio Free Phoenix article written by Mariah Fleming that has been posted for quite a while on the RFP site. Here's the url:

http://radiofreephoenix.com/billcompton.html

As I understand it, Radio Free Phoenix takes it's name from the original slogan of Bill Compton's prior station, KCAC, which was "Radio Free Phoenix."

'Best Internet Radio Station?' Isn't that like winning 'The Valedictorian of Night School?' (joke by Bob Costas).

While it's a big achievement for RFP, I barely get a chance to do anything on the Internet, much less tune into a radio station. Some companies won't let employees listen because streaming could slow down the connection. If/when the car WI-FI comes out, works well, and the connection's free then I think I will tune it.

who cares, its a frikkin internet station.
We know you have an agenda for your musical preference..but this points to the fact that internet radio listening is providing some of the growth in radio listening, whether it be internet only radio, or terrestrial radio via internet. It's happening.
It's huge, and not to be dismissed.

Re: Radio Free Phoenix gets Best of Phoenix - Internet Radio

I recently heard about internet radios that allow you to listen without a computer. Anyone had any experience with these? I assume you have to have a broadband connection. Are they expensive? I guess I should google......

I have seen a radio at Fry's, it pulls off of wifi and gets the station.

Of course, you gotta have wifi.

I find that a music station which plays the music that the DJ's want to play is refreshing. We have enough bland, safe, overly tested formats out there.

Don't limit yourself to listening only while on the internet. I enjoy listening while housecleaning, where I crank it up throughout my house, through my traditional stereo receiver and multiple speakers.

Take stereo audio cable,

plug into "Line Out" on computer,

put the other end in" Aux In" in your receiver.

Good ol' Radio Shack has the adapters. Make sure they are double banded for stereo.

The stereo broadcast quality is excellent !

I'll have to listen. Not sure if that programming is a sample of his upcoming syndication deal. I worked with Andy years ago when he programmed KMYL. Even then, he talked about creating this certain kind of station. I think he was really influenced by Compton. Too bad RFP isn't on the 93.3 frequency.

Nice to see Art Farmer on this board. Haven't seen him since we tweaked the Tower Plaza stick....(did all your hair grow back after that, Art? ;D)
