Radio Group Formally Organizes

The ad hoc group SOAR (Save Our Arts Radio) put together two months ago to oppose the sale of Kilgore College KTPB radio, has registered in Gregg County (Longview) as an incorporated entity.

Most likely the time has passed when the station's sale can be stopped, but the incorporation of SOAR creates some interesting possibilities. Perhaps the group envisions a long-term support mechanism for arts-based radio in the area, perhaps not, so it will be interesting to see precisely what SOAR's objectives are in making the move. The effort may well develop into a continuing attempt to cement arts radio into the radio landscape of East Texas.

One intriguing question that arises focuses on the role interests in Tyler will assume in whatever is developing here. Earlier, names of Tyler people were prominent on the list of SOAR organizers, so with the emergence now of SOAR, Inc. registering in Gregg County arises the question of how widespread support will be and in what way cooperation will be arranged among Tyler and Longview SOAR participants. It appears to be a commendable effort.

Whaddayawannabet they're gearing up for the next LPFM filing window. If they're incorporating, especially if they're incorporating as a 501(c)3, sure seems to me like that might be something on their horizons. Kinda like EMF might've won the battle, but SOAR is not going to let them win the war...so to speak. Or, if you can't go through the door, look for the window.

Thoughts?

Sort of tracks with my first thoughts as to what SOAR has on the drawing board. Possible that the group will devote itself, as you say, to taking out its own license--LPFM and certainly not the coverage KTPB has, but a worthwhile start nonetheless.

Be interesting to know who the trustees/officers of the group are and what their action plan looks like. The objectives are fairly obvious but how they'll go about attaining them will make for good reading.

They are exploring new ways to bring classical music back to East Texas. I don't know for sure, but I think they are facing the reality that the KTPB sale is a "done deal."

LPFM is an option. If John McCain’s pro LPFM amendment to S2686 ever becomes law, it would repeal the third adjacent prohibitions placed on LPFM. That would open up some channels in the area. As the GM of one of the two operating LPFMs in the area, I can tell you that even though they are ridiculously underpowered, LPFM can still make a difference. One in Tyler would get a loyal following with classical music.

Another idea is to purchase a translator (or construction permit) in the area to bring in Red River Network. If RM-11331 ever comes into being, it would allow them to broadcast local cultural events on such a translator. That would be an almost ideal situation for them.

Since SOAR is made up of a bunch of heavy hitters, it should make for some very interesting political wrangling. I hope they are successful.
