Radio groups commit to local content?

Reading over stories from last weeks convention. Many speakers on behalf of groups say they support local programming, but they continue to add syndicated programming and or out of town voice tracking. Were the comments just part of the pep rally, or are they reconsidering the options. Your thoughts and comments. One major group said our stations Are locally run? Don't know if he meant programming, sales, etc.

I would have asked them what they mean by local content. In the few cases where I still hear local talent, I don't hear any local content except that which is driven by the sales department.

It depends on the group and the format. Certainly CBS, Entercom, Beasley, Townsquare, and Cox are devoted to local staffing and content. The two biggest companies...not so much. Radio doesn't swim in unison. They each do their own thing.

I am aware of local staffing but when I listen, I hear little local content. I'm not complaining, just wondering what is so important about local talent when the content is national. I hear entertainment news which is by the nature of the entertainment business not local. I hear national news topics. What local content is it that radio professionals propose? Local music? Surely a ratings loser, right? City hall? No one cares. Fill me in.

Once again, it depends on the format. The ones I listen to give the following: Time, temp, weather, traffic, stories about local concerts by relevant acts, various local charity activities by the station or hosts, stories by the hosts that mention local landmarks, sports teams, politicians, or celebrities, interviews with celebs and recording acts by the local air-staff about their upcoming local appearances or their comments about local activities, and the occasional local emergency information. Is any of this "life & death" for listeners? Probably not. Then again, I have never seen this call for more local content coming from anyone other than people in radio.

Tracked shows can still give local "content", at least on music formats. All the guy 1000 miles has to do is look at the newspaper's website and read the weather report. Nothing saying that can't be just as good as a local jock in the right hands.

Does it suck for local jocks out of work? Sure. But radio isn't a jobs program, it's a business.
