Radio hang-a-rounds

After working in this market for more than three decades, I see many jocks as well as a lot of other radio people that are still here after being inactive for long periods of time that come and go out of the business, or just circling near by.  In my travels, I run into even more who worked here at one time or another and still want to come back to Nashville.  Yes, there is a lot of “show business” here, but I wonder if there is another reason for this phenomenon?

Comments and your stories please!
Merry Christmas!

Hello Watson...

you're right...lots of people make it a point to stay here...including pro athletes.
I think it's a mix of Nashville being perceived as a show business city...and also
a mix between big-city and Mayberry. Not too many places where you can see
pro sports (NHL or NFL) and go 30 minutes to a rural meat-and three for dinner.
Doing country radio here is cool...and there are just enough celebrities hanging
around Nashville at any time to make it interesting. Plus...the locals pretty much treat
the celebrities like anyone else: Nicole Kidmann and keith urban could dine anywhere
without being harassed...just a few "hellos"...no paparazzi.

Merry Christmas youse guys

Plus, if you've been on the air and in this town for a while, you are in real danger of developing what other non-radio people refer to as "a life". A school your kids like and do well in, a church family (if you swing that way) and other non-radio related interests (and sometimes income) that you are reluctant to leave. The cost of living is relatively low, the diversions are relatively high, in short, Nash-Vegas ain't a bad place to settle down (if you swing THAT way)

It's good to hear from Watt Hairston, one of the few true "originals" in this business.

Yes, there ARE a good many people who want to be in Nashville, or back in Nashville. I understand it. I've been there and have an overwhelming sense of "done that". I truly enjoyed my time in Nashville and achieved some of the greatest success there. It was truly the best of times...and the worst of times....but I'm not interested in being there again.

Why? First, the place has become a zoo when it comes to transportation. Used to be, a trip from Bellevue to Hendersonville took about 45 minutes under the best circumstances. That's dreaming today. Nashville has always been very spread-out, geographically-speaking....but it's getting impossible to get ANYWHERE!

Second, the radio business there suffers from a familiar problem...it's all owned by what I call the "corporate empty suit set". Gerry House can defend it all he wants on the air, but I remain convinced the only reason he does so is to protect his own sweetheart deal...not that he needs to. It's sad when you kiss an ass that doesn't need kissing. ;)

Finally, the REAL reason I'm not interest in coming back to Nashville is because I have discovered there IS life outside of Davidson County. A very wise singer/songwriter put it this way: "There are a lot of people in Nashville who have to have Nashville because it's Nashville". I used to be one of them. Then I put childish things away.

Nashville will always hold a special place in my heart. I love coming to visit friends there, and usually can't wait to get out. Live and work there again?

Pass.
