Radio has entered the blahs of summer

Other than the recent demise of KTRU on analog FM and the launch/relaunch of KUHA/KUHF, there's nothing going on.

The morphing of The Point into The Zone seems to have been a yawner as well.

Will probably stay this way until one of the big boys blows up a FM format, or Cumulus pulls a shocker and exits the market.

I'm not sure anyone cares about what happens on AM any more. Brokered programming clients come and go like cheap motel guests.

Any news on the LPFM front? Seems there were lots of applications some years back, but silence ever since...

Houston radio is either a zombie or dead.

(cue the Munchkin in The Wizard of Oz)

As Coroner I must aver, I thoroughly examined her.
And she's not only merely dead, she's really most sincerely dead.

That's an exaggeration of course, but not by much. But I do have high hopes for Houston local news on the radio, now that KUHF Houston Public Radio News has a radio station all to themselves.

No posts on the Houston board for 5 days. Guess Houston radio is either a zombie or dead.

Well gee, Stan. I've fallen down on the job. I'm sorry. Big news in Houston...KQUE-1230 AM has dumped South Asian "Hum tum City" programming and is now simulcasting KJOJ-Conroe/KNTE-El Campo with the "Baila" format. Hum Tum City "packed up" and moved up the dial to KLVL 1480 Pasadena.

Exciting, huh? (cue crickets)

How's life in The Triangle, friend? Any peeps from KOLE?

Actually, there is a little bit of news out of "the Triangle". Former KTRM chief engineer Benjamin Franklin Hughes passed away, in Conroe on May 24. Ben was an engineer back in the days when engineers held a real FCC license, were as responsible for the operation of their stations as the licensee and were highly respected by their station management and ownership.

Condolences may be left at www.cashnerconroe.com.

Sorry to hear about Ben. If I recall correctly, KTRM was on AM 990, which of course today is a train wreck and can't be heard anywhere if it is even on the air.

Regarding KOLE, it has been broadcasting a Hispanic format for awhile, although I don't always hear it on the air, but it is more consistently on than off now. I don't know how successful it will be, or how the bills are being paid. I suppose Birach still owns the station.

I've lost track of how many different stations Hum Tum City has been on. KLVL probably won't be the last. Won't do any better there; the night signal is nonexistent in the heavily Asian areas of the market.

Liberman will probably lease out 1230 to someone else. The "Baila" format is an airtime filler, just like the "Azucar" format that was on 880 for a while.

Haven't heard KYOK 1140 on the air last few times I've checked. Are they now off while trying for the move to Katy? Guessing Asian language is in their future; a Katy signal beamed ESE would go right at the heavily Asian areas of town.

Frog, KYOK has its very own sunrise and sunset. Been reported here that KYOK has left the lantern on all night, and then not bother to air during the daylight hours.

I guess it depends on when you try 1140. Friday's KYOK sunrise was around 11am. Thursday KYOK was off the air by 4pm. Today it has yet to hit the air. I guess it's taking the day off in observance of Memorial Day. I guess their saving their pennies to move it by not using the electricity more than necessary.

As for KQUE, I assume what you said is right. The new ID for "Baila" is now "KNTE-FM, El Campo 96.9 Megahertz, KJOJ-AM, Conroe 880 Kilohertz, y KQUE-AM 1230 Kilohertz. Um......KQUE is licensed to Houston in case they forgot. I figure it's a matter of time before KQUE is leased out again.

Houston radio has been dead since the late 90s.

Thats pretty well much everywhere though. Sad as I said before, when XM came out, FM would bash XM for them not being live and local.

NOW LOOK.
