Radio Havana missing on all frequencies

Guess it's inevitable that the money for failing equipment and aging technology just isn't there. Cuba isn't alone. Even their hammers of R Marti on 11860 and 11930 are down.

Miss the good music on 15140 and 11760.

They've been on borrowed time for years. Frankly, I won't miss them if they're gone for good.

Cuba has been undergoing severe power problems. Outages of the whole island or parts of it, rationed service. It would not surprise me that they considered the SW services to be something they could suspend for the moment.

Oh, and the entire radio system, AM, FM, SW, was recently rebuilt by the Chinese. The infrastructure is relatively new, but may suffer from poor maintenance due to the state of the economy.

That is the likely cause, and has been going on for quite a while. There have been a few recent occasions when I’ve checked the Radio Marti shortwave frequencies and found no sign of jamming. Missing RHC transmissions have been widely and regularly reported on various SW forums.

That rebuild happened about 20 years ago for the SW transmitters. Seems BBEF units have durability issues; a couple of Chinese sites built in Albania around the same time had transmitters starting to die after only 15 years.

Should the communist regime in Cuba ever collapse, and be replaced by a democratically elected government, it will be fascinating to see how the entire Cuban broadcast infrastructure and industry is revamped and rebuilt. I hope I live to see that.

i had someone or something on 6000 around 06utc oct 6

Shortwave, I assume, would finally be put out of its misery should that regime change occur.

Wouldn’t surprise me if even the current regime finally dumps the SW service. Definitely gone under any new government.

Meanwhile at a check around 0430 UT today (Oct 6) I found all three Radio Marti SW frequencies in the clear with no trace of jamming.

Heard the dead carrier on 6000 Saturday night. I never hear the jammers behind Marti anymore. Haven't heard them in years. Maybe not since 2015 or so.

There have not been jammers on 1180 for decades. What Cuba has done is put about 20 stations across Cuba on 1180 carrying one of the national government networks. Instead of jamming, they are blocking Martí with strong local signals everywhere.

Due to circumstances beyond my procrastination, there hasn't been too much DXing for about six months.
But I haven't seen any thread mention about AM. For example, is The Wobbler on 870 still serving its audience?

i hear them all the time... in fact, i regularly.. daily hear the jammers on for HOURS after marti is off.

Nearly half of Cuba without power as blackouts deepen

HAVANA, Oct 4 (Reuters) - More than half of Cuba was without power on Thursday evening as fuel shortages and broken-down power plants left the government with little choice but to black out a vast swath of the Caribbean island nation.

One would think that they would have secured solar panels from their Communist buddies: China. Not a total answer but assuming their power peaks are like the US and air conditioning is a major part of the peak.

As for keeping aging plants going. Any power plant over 40 years old has parts that are subject to wear and tear that can be fabricated in a machine shop.

The USSR (another Communist buddy) has have a captive customer to ship their embargoed oil to: Cuba.

If I was Cuba I would tell both Russia and China that if they didn't help out better, an alliance with the USA is possible and all Russian and Chinese agents, aids, military personnel would have to find somewhere else to work.

In fact I am disappointed that the CIA hasn't "flipped" the Government by granting pardons and a$$$ylum to Cuban leaders.

Better yet tell Putin we will "swap" Cuba for the Ukraine. He pulls out of Ukraine or we will liberate Cuba from it's fascist government.

I thought the embargo was over. Can't Cuba grow things in its tropical climate and sell them to the U.S. and elsewhere for dollars? And what about the tourism industry? Aren't Canadians and Europeans flying to Havana for fun-in-the-sun vacations during cold weather months, spending their Euros and Pounds?

And it would be nice to see Communism/Authoritarianism fall in Cuba as it did in Eastern Europe. Commercial broadcasters could take over the TV and FM dials again. A few big CMQ-like 50,000 to 150,000 watt stations doing news, sports and talk on AM. I'm sure like the BBC, there could be a democratic government CBC operating Radio Reloj and other AM news/talk networks. But that may be wishful thinking.

They can't grow enough even for their own people to eat decently.

The U.S. has a trade embargo on Cuban exports.

Not enough. While there are some European hotel chains there, their sales point is being a low cost alternative to PR or the Dominican Republic or the islands like Jamaica and the Caymans.

Remember, Cuba is 800 miles wide. It takes dozens of stations to cover the main markets; ground conductivity is not good. And even Cuba is moving away from AM. In smaller Caribbean nations and destinations, like Martinique and Curacao and Trinidad and Jamaica, AM has been gone for decades.

This may be why the Radio Enciclopedia audio stream has been offline for several days. Beautiful music not a high priority in the grand scheme of things.
