Radio In This Town... An outsiders view!

~Yawn~

Area 108 Station of the Year?? Ha ha ha ahhh hah! Doesn't speak to well of the rest of the pack now does it?

Howard's gone and now we are seeing how BAD Extreme truly is. Oh wait, R&R's PD of the year is at the helm. Doesn't speak to well for that award either does it?

Jack goes up?? Doesn't speak to well for all you "personalities" does it?

I hear that Beasley tried to hire thier former production guy back for 12 grand a year less than he made two years ago. Doesn't speak to well for them does it?

Looks like the Point can't make their point.. Crapped out.

I'm hitting snooze and going back to sleep, you guys aren't giving me anything to stay awake with.

Being named station of the year by an alternative weekly newspaper is an honor yet also predictable. Papers like that are 'supposed' to like stations such as AREA. The readers and especially the writers of publications like that often have tastes that are quite different than the masses. For example, they often pick obscure bands that no one has ever heard of as "album of the year". Those bands are probably talented, yet sales stay low and in the scheme of things critics opinions are not significant.

Industry awards are political, barely worth paying attention to. As for EXTREME they will continue to freefall in the ratings without Howard. But once they finally bottom out they will still be better off as an alternative than they would have been as a FREE FM disaster.

Then the same could be said for Los Angeles and the many many markets where JACK is doing well. The music on JACK has a lot to do with the stations success. A jockless station that played a typical Hot AC or Classic rock tight list of familiar favorites would probably do very poorly. I still say JACK will peak out in the next few months, although it sure hasn't happened yet, at least not in Vegas.

Beasley is known as being the cheapest company in town, although a few people there are making big bucks.

The POINT is the single biggest victim of JACK. Trying to re-invent themselves as a classic rock station won't help either. I'm sorry but as much as I love the group and song, "Baby I'm A Want You" by Bread is NOT classic rock!

Out of curiosty, What radio markets/stations do you like?

I like you Jay! I hope you are in the "business" in a management position, you get it! I am not in the business, but a fan. I hear what radio in Vegas is and know that it could and should be alot better. When traveling, I enjoy listening to KFI in Los Angeles, KCAL in Riverside is not too bad. KEDJ in Phoenix is ok.. Locally, KOMP is decent and Area sucks, but not as much as most other stations. Unfortunately, as a listener, I am usually forced to choose a station that "sucks less" instead of one I really "want" to hear.

The entire medium could be alot better. Management "low balls" talent and they get what they pay for. Low ball PD's play it waaaay to conservative and hire "no talent" liner card reading drones. Every now and then a real talent rises up and they are either (a) fired for not reading the cards exactly as the consultant has mandated or, (b) they move on to another, slightly higher paying job where the cycle repeats itself.

Could someone explain to me how guys like Kahuna and Mike Obrian manage to keep their jobs? Their stations have tanked! Neither had experience as a program director yet even through a general manager shake up they hold their jobs?? Cut your losses. How does Craig Powers ever get a job. Keep your fingers crossed Craig you may end up programming Jack in Los Angeles.

If radio is to survive, it better start entertaining, that's all I can say.

Vegas radio sucks. And anyone who claims otherwise either has their head in the sand or doesn't know good radio. When my radio buddies come to town and we drive around with the radio on, they are amazed at how bad it is. My oldest son, who is not in radio but has lived here a year now, called me two nights ago and told me to turn on KCYE to hear the terrible night jock. I'd already heard him, so I didn't bother to turn it on.
