Radio & its embellished PR machine

Why does radio embellish so much?

I'm sitting here reading the announcement for a new team member on a morning show.

The PD hired a local, but he told The Big Radio Trade Publication: "After speaking with many candidates around the nation, we found the best candidate in our own backyard."

That's baloney. They found the best candidate in their own backyard because (A) the candidate needs no moving expenses or housing and (B) the candidate will work for less.

What am I missing here? There's no EEO in the PR puff-puff-I'll-blow-the-competitions-house-down you put out to Big Radio Trade Publications.

Isn't that what we have all been taught? Make it bigger than it is. Sell, sell, sell. "That is such a GREAT new song...blah, blah, blah..."

It's how we work.

Radio often goes overboard on self promotion. On-air promos are great, but when a station beats listeners over the head with them they tend to defeat their purpose, especially if it's a long tsl format.

i just wish we could get rid of the word "new". i'm very tired of stations that are always "the NEW blah blah blah", whatever, it's still music you THINK we want to hear.

True. Every business is putting out goods or services that it thinks their market wants. They might do some research or look at the trends, but still everyone in every business is making a guess.
