So that is what happened to 990. They are counting on sales for tower strength. Did CBS give that sage advice? ;)

well 990 was in limbo until about 4-5 months ago when it became the sportsfan 990 because of new management and the station is just hiring more sales reps so that they can get up there with the ticket and ESPN. And Actually, on of the Hosts that they have came over from the ticket and he was also on the Miller Lite Man Law commercials.

Came over from the Ticket? Wasn't that dude a CALLER?

There's one big-aced difference in coming up with one good phone call a day and coming up even with one good HOUR a day. And from what I've heard of 990, they can't even come up with a good hour a day...

Although I'm sure taking people that have never done sports before (Like Niki Granville) and taking guys that have washed out at half the stations in town has nothing to do with 990's complete inability to be the least bit interesting...

No the guy i am talking about was not a caller...The guy i am talking about is Blu on the Sports Mix.

Yeah, "Blue from Pleasent Grove"...That dude was a caller, and that's it.

And while I realize everyone wants to live the Leon Simon dream and go from your humdrum dayjob to a glamarous radio career, from what I've heard of 990, Blue ain't the guy to be the next Leon Simon...

Although isn't Leon Simon back to living the Leon Simon dream? Pretty sure I've heard him on in the AM...

But 990 is great...I know when I looked at the market I said "you know what we need? Another sports station. One hosted by the sports director of a station (KNON) that had no known sports programming, cohosted by a guy who failed as a co-host/sidekick on another station, and featuring the failed traffic reporter from the dominant sports station in town, a caller from that same station, a couple of newspaper reporters and a handful of people I've never heard of...

Oh yeah, if that's not the recipe for success, I don't know what is...

You heard correctly. Mostly UNT interns are running it. The only income they basically have is running Frisco baseball feeds.

The station itself is owned by a guy named Thom Bailey...But the frequency is owned by a guy named Otto Miller...oh and by the way the station is not run by interns and people are getting paid. Oh and yes Leon Simmon is on the air 5am - 9am and the station technically is a talk station its just sports talk.

"MOSTLY INTERNS" run it .Source :UNT and other 990 staffers.
I appreciate your PR for the station, but the economics are embellished. The only spots that can be truly called spots are on the Frisco Roughrider feed. The station is not doing well at all.

ok thats not true the interns are on the board pretty much just weekends and not even the whole day.....oh yah and the comment about thom bailey owning the station i meant he owned the name and yes Bernard Dallas LLC does own the station it self

I don't know who the guy is in the morning with Leon, but if he isn't the dullest sports knife in the block I'm not sure who is. The morning after Eddie Robinson died he was going on and on about how "he groomed Doug Williams, the first Quarterback in the superbowl. Not the first "african american" quarterback - the first quarterback. I'm guessing every team ran the single wing prior to that. ;D I tuned in during an extended commercial set on the Ticket and heard some guy in the afternoon basically reading the box scores for all 4 major sports from the paper, and not well either. I have heard two commercials total during the times I have turned over - one is for a nail salon inside some hair salon and the other is for a sports card shop. And people are getting paid, how?

the guy in the morning with Leon is the owner/CEO he's here from like 5am to 10pm everyday....and there are more commercials than those two. to name a few...Dr. pepper, DMN, North dallas, bank, a cigar shop, jeep, metro pcs, vegas image parties, franks sports bar, mary sheperd insurance, k-9 direction who pays to host a show...etc

Good lord! Sounds like your classic workaholic. Is that every day as in 7 days a week, or just 5? Either way, man he needs a life.

only reason he is here that long is because he has to be because he is the owner/ceo and the morning talk show host...and he is here 7 days a week but not those hours on the weekend...also on mondays and fridays his girlfriend is usually here cause she doesn't work then but his girlfriend is also the producer of one of the weekend shows.

Well, I have been a fan of this board for a while now, and a huge Dallas radio fan since I was a child. This string is what brought me into actually becoming a player on the boards. I am not in the radio industry, so I have no financial agenda and I am not looking for a job. For the purposes of this string, I will say I have been a p1 of the little Ticket since the first year it was on.

I gave this station a shot to fill in the gaps when the Ticket goes to commercial breaks, and they could not hold me that long. There are 2 former (and current in one case) callers of the Ticket that are on shows in some form on 990. Another, as has been mentioned previously was a failed traffic person, along with a former board op that should be more off air than on air. I guet the logic of trying to get names that are a little familar to the market, but get decent ones. Doug Anderson or Kevin Blanford sound like Rick Dees compared to the current talent, in my opinion.

It would also help if the Roughrider games did not sound like they were being broadcast with a Realistic brand mic plugged into a cell phone.

Mainly, they have a very long way to go to reach basic listenability. If I was Thom Bailey, the first thing I would do is let others broadcast and get off the air. I like Leon Simon, but when he is the strongest part of your morning team, you are strugggggling. And the spots voiced by the former callers of the Ticket are HI-larious.

Thanks for indulging me.
