Radio Kingston WKNY celebrates 85th anniversary

KINGSTON, N.Y. — Radio Kingston WKNY will celebrate its 85th anniversary on Saturday, Dec. 14, from noon to 4 p.m. at its headquarters at 693 Broadway.

Jimmy Buff, the non-profit radio station’s Executive Director said the Radio Station first signed on the air at 8:15 p.m. Dec. 16, 1939, from Kingston High School. He noted it originally broadcasted at 1500 AM before moving down to 1490, where it has remained ever since. Buff said they played a recorded message from then-Mayor Conrad Heiselman who couldn’t be there. Come Saturday, history will repeat itself with current Mayor Steve Noble unable to attend.

Didn't catch the 85th Anniversary, but I did catch the WKNY team at the Snowflake festival on December 6th. Great stuff. I also saw the incredible neon sign outside their studios on Broadway. Someone dare tell me this isn't the most awesome sign in front of a radio station anywhere! Back up your claim with a picture!
