Radio-Locator

If you're not a subscriber, you get 10 "freebies" every day, then you have to wait until the next day to try again.

Sometimes when I checkout r-l, it give me the bandwith error on the first search.

Re: Radio-Locator

Sometimes I go there once a month and I've used up my bandwidth just by asking it to look up one station. Oh well, you get what you pay for...

Somehow the site goes by the IP address to determine how much bandwidth a person has used. One time when I got the message that I used the maximum bandwidth for the day, I deleted the cookie for the site, got offline (I'm on dialup at home), then logon to my ISP again, it gives me a different IP address, then it seems to work ok. A similar trick can be done for those on cable modem. You can do the same thing, only you turn off your modem, then turn it back on and you get a new IP address that way. I don't know if the same thing can be said about DSL as some DSL services use dynamic IP addresses and some use static IP addresses. I know cable modem services use static. I haven't figured out how to get around the bandwidth problem on a T1, which is what I use at work.

I've never had that problem, and I seem to get a lot more than ten "freebie" searches. I haven't counted, but it seems like I get a few dozen or so before it limits my quota.

Another way that I've defeated their limit to get more searches is to use a different browser. I have both Netscape and Internet Explorer on all my Mac's, and if I use up my daily r-l quota on one browser, I can start all over again on the other.

Re: Radio-Locator

Not true... Comcast Cable uses Dynamic IP’s.

It used to be that you could get about a half hour (or more) of free service on Radio Locator per day. Then, about a year or so ago, they severely limited their free service to about 10 minutes per day.--And that's 10 total minutes per day, not 10 minutes at any one time.

Eli, I thought they keep track of you by your IP number, don't they?

Re: Radio-Locator

ditto with roadrunner cable in Detroit too (at least in Farmington Hills)

I don't really know, but the browser switch has worked for me.

Hmmm....Interesting.

Re: Radio-Locator

I know before we started subscribing here at the office, the bandwidth limit applied to the total amount used by anyone here. So, if someone had been playing with the site all morning, I couldn't search at all. Talk about annoying. I assume this is because we are networked and have static IP addresses. The Gold membership is only $75/month, and definitely worth it for us because it allows ownership searches.

USE FCC SITE with new pattern plots...

The only problem I've had with the site relates to my pop-up blockers.

This building has DSL, so perhaps that's why I'm not limited to 10 minutes or 10 searches.

Try the FCC AM QUERY page on the FCC web site...they now have more quantitative technical info and pattern plots for AM stations (in pdf form)...the info is better than radio-locator for pinpointing nulls in your affiliates' coverage area...
