Radio Makes people happier than TV or Internet

Saw this survey on one of our show prep services.

RADIO MAKES PEOPLE HAPPIER THAN TV OR INTERNET: A new survey out of the UK found that radio makes people happier than TV or the web. In the study, called 'Media and the Mood of the Nation,' respondents said they experienced a 100 percent lift in happiness and 300 percent boost to their energy levels when listening to a radio show versus not consuming any type of media at all. Watching TV and surfing the internet also significantly boosts people's happiness and energy levels -- but the positive effects of radio listening was greater. Researcher Mark Barber explained, "People are the happiest and most energetic when listening to radio. It plays an important emotional role in people's lives. People use radio as a lifestyle support system and to make themselves feel better about their lives. Our latest research highlights the immense potential of radio to influence emotions." Radio in the UK != radio in the US.

Two different beasts, and I prefer Radio 1 over ANYTHING on the US stations..

Its true in the US too. Its not comparing both markets. Regardless if you like US radio or not people are still singing to songs on the radio especially this weekend

Brett,

You know this as much as I do that it's not just about the songs. :)

Radio has personality. You have on-air staff that can associate with the music and the local scene, something that TV can't really do and although you have some personality on Internet stations, most of them are still non-stop music along with an identifier.

There's still something to be said about a person being there with the music.

American radio is way too calculated and sounds way too impersonal. I personally prefer listening to international stations that at least seem to care more about their sound and product.

I want someone to go post this very same topic in the Phoenix section, RIGHT AFTER the next time I post a new topic about conservative radio, or just talk radio in general. I just want to see what happens... that's all. ;D

It's nice to hear the same music as all the other listeners of the station. Good live DJs add their personality to the station rather than just read liners and can relate to a local audience. The station appears at local nightclubs, attracting their listeners, and the DJ is free to play dance music knowing that the crowd loves it. It's really nice to hear phone calls on the air from listeners who love the station. And I can leave my iPod off.
