"Radio man"

Is anyone old enough to remember when Top 40 was on AM, and before WBMJ when Spanish, and into the 70's on the old WRAI, there was a station manager who did comedy bits calling himself ' Radio Man"?

I almost went to work for him in 1975, first name was Bob. In 1975 there were only 2 english speaking stations in San Juan, WRAI at 1550, and WHOA at 870. WBMJ-AM was Radio Rock.

Does anyone remember back that far?

Yeah. Bob Norman. Also had a small ad agency and even tried to do a phone based ratings system.

Yes, At the time I was GM of the Pueblo Supermarkets stations, WQII (11-Q) and WSRA (Sonorama). I remember it well.

Yep - I worked for WBMJ 1190 from 1972-1974 as Scott Brady and under my given name Karl Phillips and went over with Bob Norman and Bill Thompson when they "fired up" - WRAI after Radio Rock was reborn in Spanish. I would assume that Bob Norman is now departed - but I hate thinking about that. He had a unique voice...a very nice guy as I remember. I would like to see more recollections of both WRAI and WBMJ. I fondly remember the guys I worked with:

WBMJ
Bob Bennett
Bill Thompson
Charlie Brown (I also roomed with him for a while - the crazy nut)
Marty Malo
Philip Sanchez Baker
Sunshine
Heavy Dude
Moonshadow (Now in NYC on WSKQ mornings)

WRAI
Bill Thompson
Tom Sherwood
Terry Estes
Bob Norman

Those Top 40 days are gone - even in San Juan.

Emanuel "Sunshine" Logroño now at Salsoul. Also formerly with Los Rayos Gamma.

Is that Moonshadow the same one that was at Cosmos 94 in the 80's? Or was that Salsa 63/Cadena QBS? Memory fails...

Moonshadow is Raymond Broussard, who was the Gufeo Matutino on Radio rock from about 1976 to 1981 when he went to Z-93, where he stayed until around the early 90's, when he went to NY to be a morning sidekick on WSKQ. He is still in NY after bouncing between WCAA and wskq.

Ah yes! I remember now! I saw him on a Z-93 promo ad in TV-Guía...or maybe Vea.

Anyway, I remember listening to Radio Rock in June 1981 while staying at Rio Mar with my family. I was 12 then. Carmen Jovet did the news.

Who were the DJ's of "El Meneo de la Mañana" in WOYE-FM Cosmos 94 in the 80's? Wasn't Frankie Jay one of them? Gosh, I'm only 39 and my memory is already going kaput. :p

Thanks for bringing back good memories. I remember listening to WBMJ on the beach at The El San Juan Hotel back in 1972 while on Christmas vacation. Most of the tourists' radios were tuned to that station back then. All I can remember is that they broadcast from the top floor of a hotel and had lots of reverb and uptempo jocks. I remember back then that I thought they sounded similar to WMID in Atlantic City. I also remember hearing "Never Been to Spain" by Three Dog Night and wondering if it was a local hit due to PR being Spanish speaking.

That was "from the penthouse of the Hotel Darlington..." The Darlington later was the Borinquen and then the Gan Bahia.

For a while, WBMJ had quite decent numbers. When ratings services changed in 1972, and the number of Continentals declined, the station dropped. It became Radio Rock and for a number of years, was the 12+ top station in San Juan.

Frankie & Red? Red Shadow, now on WXYX, came from Mayagüez... Frankie and Red together did mornings for many years at X-100, too.
