RADIO MIX SHOW DJS-WHO IS THE BEST?

Who has better skills on mixing? LOVE-fm's DJ JM3 or V103's Maurice Culpepper or LIL John Coleman or Boolu Master?

Re: JM3 vs. MAURICE"ICE"CULPEPPER

It's all done on Pro Tools anyway. So skill is out of the question unless we are asking who is better at moving a mouse?!?

I was a club dj for 18 years. I would blow them all out of the water. Thing is. There is no money doing that for radio anymore. I sold mix taped to 94.7, b96, bmx and even did rock classicx. They pay you per cd. Maurice is making about $100 bucks. They are not there live. It is a cd or dat. So, who cares if they can mix. No money is no money!

Later bud

You sure about that? Alot of big talk there, sir......
Actually Maurice makes $65.00 per mix. JM3  & lil John been doing clubs since 83.

There was never any money in Radio mixes to begin with.....

Uhh yeah kid. Been in the biz for more than 20 years. Radio does not pay anymore.
Especially for mix deejays. They are a dime a dozen.

I can get any basement jock to put an hour long set together for under $50bucks, and play the hell out of it over the course of a week. B96 just unloaded 6 of their guys and brought in 5 no-names. Not hurting them at all. Julian, Schomer, Mixin Marc, Ski, and the others were making bucks, but are gone. They wanted too much money. Clubs will pay bigbucks but not radio.

So, to answer your comment. I know this industry all too well. These radio mix jocs make no cash and can put a track together in about 20 minutes.

B96 was the only station who paid well...GCI & BMX NEVER paid well...

One Question: have you seen any of those jocks play live? If not, how can you assess skill level. If you say they are just clicking a mouse?

No-names? ok lets see their club residencies

Billy the Kid - Level, Moda , Sound Bar , Zero Gravity
Louie Loop - Moda, Spy Bar, Privilege, Four, Ontourage, Stone Lotus
DJ Spin - Vision, Hard Drive, NRG Thursdays
Josh the Funky 1 - World wide appearances
Mixin Marc - Crobar , Martini Ranch

Lets see the old "mixmasters"

Bobby D - Zero Gravity , Bamboo Room
DJ Markski - Zero Gravity
TKC - Vibe

For no-names the new B96 mixmasters are sure doing hell of a good job rocking the best clubs in chicago.

I personally like Mixin Marc and Josh the Funky 1.
I also wish that Bad Boy Bill and Brian Middleton were still on the radio though. They were great!!!

Can someone tell me more about B 96 and what happened there?

Which of the mixers got fired from there? Who is on there now? Was Julian let go?

That mix show has been sorry ever since they got rid of the Mixmasters of the 90s so I am not surprised.....

Julian Perez is still at B96, he is the Mixshow Director. He doesn't do as many mixes like he used to, when he does he mostly mixes Hip-Hop/R&B and Pop stuff. Why I don't know.
The other DJ's are: Mixin Marc, Josh The Funky 1, Louie Loop, Billy The Kid, DJ Flipside, DJ Speed, DJ Boogie Boy and DJ Nonstop.
All I know is (I think in 2002 or 2003), Julian left B-96 to start up Klub Kiss (at Kiss 103.5) and a new mixing team to compete with B-96. Bobby D., TKC, DJ Markski, Tim "Spinnin" Schommer and Brian Middleton were still on B-96. Bad Boy Bill had left the station in late 1998 to focus on his DJ touring.
The relationship between Kiss 103.5 and Julian Perez didn't last long (I don't think it was even a year) before Julian went back to B-96. As a result, Julian brought over some of the guys from his team at Kiss which resulted in Bobby D., TKC, DJ Markski being shown the door. For some reason, Mixin Marc survived the cut. I don't know the whole story about what happened, but this is just my insight. Maybe someone who knows more about it can add their two cents.

Oh now I know what story you are talking about. I thought you meant in the last few months some DJ's got fired.

Yeah, it was weird. Egg on Kiss' face when they were playing Julian Jumpin' Perez only to hear him in a B 96 mix on the same night. I guess he showed them. Just he lost where he came from with mixing hip-pop as I call it.

Actually the mixes on B 96 were pretty stale before Julian left for Kiss. They are even worse now although DJ Spin and a few other DJs have some nice mixes once in a blue moon.

If you want to hear how B 96 or even BMX used to sound, check out http://www.wbmx.com I am listening to a Julian mix from 2000. I have stopped listening to the radio ever since this website came together. It is amazing.

There is even a story in the summer how they tried to do a collaboration with Tik Tak a former Kiss DJ by playing classic dance on Friday afternoons. That time slot killed everything else on the station hands down and was the talk of the early summer.

But since Kiss' DJ was an idiot and this idea was a DJ's idea and not his, he got fired for thinking outside the box. Then to add insult to injury he keeps the concept and what a surprise, now Kiss has their own DJ team and are airing commercial dance mixes. If they actually used some common sense, we would be talking about B 96 going under.

Kinda off the subject: I think Dance Factory is a good alternative, just too obscure for me and I think the average radio listener. I would like to hear more commercial dance on there to even it out. Bobby D. is about the only DJ who will occassionally throw in commercial dance, but I may be wrong since I have not heard the show in a few weeks.

most of us in Boston do our mix shows live. I am not into the computer jock thing. I do all my mixes live, record them on CDR and then hand them in to the station. Been doing that for years..

the BEST radio mixers in chicago aren't on the air any more. (except for KJJ)

Mike Hitman Wilson
Frankie Hollywood Rodriguez
Farley Jackmaster Funk
Mickey Mixin Oliver
Mario Smokin' Diaz
Brian Middleton
Tim Spinnin' Schommer
Armando
The Amazin' Pazens
Teri Bristol
Bad Boy Bill
Steve Silk Hurley

i've given up listening to both B and Kiss.

Main reason is Jocks back then had creative control of mixes.....KJJ wont mix (like he used to) any more because of the garbage that he has to play now....

But you didnt anwser the question...of the list I GAVE.....who is the best?

I know Armando Rivera hosted, but there was another DJ named Armando who did mixes (as well as put out records) too.

I think KJJ also doesn't mix like he used to due to the fact that besides the constraints CC has on what he does, he's got that cop job, and all the stuff he does for 1club.fm. Busy guy, that KJJ!

As far as your list of who's the best - yes, I answered your question. Silence is golden.

Hello, it's Armando. FOR THE RECORD - I did mix on radio live on KELP in El Paso, TX. I was a mixer back during my early teens and dj'ed in El Paso, Texas and also across the border in Juarez, Mexico. I mixed live on my night show on KELP in El Paso, TX from 7p-7:30p. The fact that i a mixer was one of the assets i had that contributed to my being hiring at 'BMX to host the mix show in Chicago at the age of 20. I was an on-air personality who could relate to the music/mixers and the audience of the mix show because i was a club deejay. When i started working at 'BMX i made a tough decision and decided that i was going to focus strictly on being an on-air radio personality. I left the club mixing behind and closed that chapter of my life.

Armando Gallop was a mixer/producer. I didn't know him very well; but, on several occassions i had to tell him to stop telling people that he was the Armando from the radio station 'BMX. In other words, he would tell people that he was me ... in fact that's what lead me to start saying "the real Armando" on 'bmx.

Oh...I remember, Armando. I do remember. From my days at "the record pool" when we were on Chicago and the move over to Randolph...I think at one time I dealt with nearly all the mix-show DJs ('BMX/'GCI/B96/'CRX/'LUW/'KKC/'CYC...etc.) in my pool, except for 2 or 3 - "south-siders". I remember the deal with the "other" Armando...though he did have a few cool house tracks back in the day...LOL...where is he now?

You're still the coolest cat on the dial.

sean
