Radio: More NAB Fumbles follies

NAB President David “Fumbles” Rehr did it again.

He doesn’t just step in it, he rolls in it.

Fumbles, you poor bastard, those $10,000 payoffs just don't go as far as they used to.

All that NAB money you’ve been funneled into his coffers and Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) delivers a bill, the Radio All Digital Channel Receive Act, which would, if passed, essentially work in the reverse of what it was supposed to for the NAB and the radio industry.

This Radio All Digital Channel Receive Act includes the following wording:

"..apparatus shipped in interstate commerce or manufactured in the United States that is designed to receive signals broadcast in both the satellite digital audio radio service and the terrestrial AM or FM broadcast service..(must have HD Radio)"

I know of only one radio, by Tivoli, that has satellite and analog AM/FM built in. Does this mean that AM/FM receivers that are "satellite-ready" must include HD Radio or only those that actually have satellite radio installed must have HD?

As John Gorman observes, if it's the later choice, an easy workaround to this act is to never install AM/FM at all in a satellite receiver.

Seems as if the NAB accomplished nothing here (which is not unusual for them).

I assume NABiBiquity's primary intent is to get HD included in all factory-installed car radios that have satellite capability. Apparently, they're confident that consumers would never purchase a car without an AM/FM analog radio (hey, it may not be "digital", but it works) -- however as Gorman points out, there's a pretty good chance this plan could backfire if the bill is adopted as presently worded.

The auto manufacturers will simply make "terrestrial" an extra-cost option and consumers will all pay more for radio.

I just bought a new car with a Blaukpunkt 230 watt stereo in it, includes XM, AM, FM and CD player, this was part of an upgrade package, if it had included HD I probably wouldn't have opted for it. I like the XM for it's variety but the sound of the analog FM beats it. I still find myself listening to XM more than anything at least at this point, has a lot of things I like that terrestrial radio doesn't. I wouldn't have bought a stand alone XM unit though either. I would want an AM FM analog radio.

I love how the NAB want free reign to do as they please, but want government subsidies so they can operate. Golly, this sounds familiar.
