1) Anybody think that 93FLZ and Mix 100.7 play a lot of the same stuff.

2) Ryan Seacrest is much less annoying than Tesh

3) What the **** is the name "Jo Mama Johnson" supposed to signify in a musical genre not know for celebratring androgeny?

Jo Mama Johnson is an absolutely unfathomable name for a personality on major market Rap stations owned by CC. Maybe it actually is a shout to "mamas" listening like " YO Mamas, I am your Johnson" ! Bit it still seems out there for conventional radio. On non-commercial, no big deal-----------but CC? Anybody know the programming magic here.

" YO Mamas, I am your Johnson"

Congratz MsMusicRadio... funniest thang to be written on this board in MONTHS.

Thanks Mike. When is WGUL going back to standards? I actually miss it. But then I am outside the 25-54 target demo.

I would love to see standards return to WGUL, but barring that, they could at least clear Neal Boortz live during the day....Gallagher is milktoast. But my bet is that Salem is calling the shots and doesnt give local people much control over programming.

'FLZ plays mostly dreck. They could play cutting-edge House, Trance, and other forms of ultra chic electronica, but that would not be mainstream (read: tested, approved, and boring) enough. I haven't listened lately, but the dj's used to sound mostly like blathering 14-year-olds. Unlistenable.
Mix plays a variation of the infamous Bad Oldies format. They take the 150 best AC & Pop songs, throw them out, and play everything else. It's incomprehensible, thoroughly-tested, safe, and dull as dishwater. Tesh fits right in (ZZzzzzzz). Unlistenable.

It's not "Jo Mama", it's "Jomama", for whatever that's worth. It may be indecipherable to those of us not familar with the genre, but it's kind of a cool air name. Jomama (Ron Shepard) has used it for many years and is, by the way, a class act and a wizard of a radio programmer. In my dealings with him he was always professional AND pleasant. Send him an e-mail via his station and ask him about his air name. And please share anything you find out...

MAYBE IT MEANS SOMETHING UNHIP OLD PEOPLE DON'T GET. I CONCEDE. IT STILL SOUNDS LIKE A DUDE USING A WOMAN'S NAME IN A FIELD WHERE SOME ARTISTS HAVE BEEN KNOWN FOR EXPRESSING HOMOPHOBIC SENTIMENTS.

THAT WOULD BE LIKE A CLASSIC ROCK MALE DJ USING THE MONIKER OF "MOTORCYCLEMAMA STUDLEY' OR "BIKERCHICK BEARDSLEY".

In other words they could transform a highly rated, very profitable station into a 1-share but they choose not to. How unhip.

I've noticed that FINALLY 101.5 is playing decent 80's. Before Shark took over, they played songs that ranged so much that you would hear one on mix and another on the bone. Over the past 2 weeks, I've heard Seal, Alanis, REM, Depeche Mode, Talking Heads. Now, if they could just dump the old van halen and bon jovi.....

1) WHAT THE POINT ALSO NEEDS IS AN AIRSTAFF THAT SOUNDS READY FOR PRIMETIME. I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS EITHER. THE EAGLE GETS 2 PROFESSIONAL SOUNDING ANNOUNCERS AND THEN ABOUT 15 HOURS OF NOBODY. THE POINT IS STAFFED ( OR VT'ED) 18 HOURS A DAY AND ONLY AM DRIVE DOES NOT SOUND LIKE A COLLEGE STATION. SORRY.

2) SORRY TO BIKERCHICK. DIDN'T MEAN ANYTHING NEGATIVE. NOW I WONDER WHO BIKERCHICK IS. WHO WOULD RESPOND LIKE THIS.???? ONE PERSON WHO POSTS HERE AT TIMES COMES TO MIND; HE HAS A CLASSIC ROCK SHOW, A STRANGE SENSE OF HUMOR, AND A STRANGE NAME THAT MAKES ONE THINK OF ANDREW ZIMMERN ON BIZARRE FOODS ON THE TRAVEL CHANNEL--------COWHEAD

When I first saw the question, I thought that you were referring to playlists overlapping. Then the more I thought about it, I realized that you were talking about each station doing so. That said, a definite yes. FLZ's playlist is verrry limited. They've been quite heavy on certain recurrents (remember when they kept playing Taylor Swift's "Teardrops on My Guitar" in moderate rotation while "Our Song", which never got played on that station other than AT40, was making a push for the Top Twenty on MediaBase?), and seemingly ignore songs unless either it crashes the top fifteen with a bullet ("Let it Rock", for an example), or is re-done by I presume their own editing staff so that it gives DJ's a chance to do a promo ("Addicted", which was already in the Top Ten on MB when FLZ finally starting playing it, only to literally ruin the song with that guitar intro into the song instead of the natural beginning of it--a practice I have always been peeved at them for). Their list of gold hits is, well, curious. For some reason, they've been playing two songs by Sublime--neither of which reached the Top 40 on R/R lately, and have included the booty-shaking anthem "Baby Got Back". It seems like (when compared to their Orlando counterpart XL who oh, by the way, have hired Kovacs--great to see him land back on his feet in the biz) this is a station that isn't willing to go out on a limb and has become rather pedestrian.

As for Tesh 100.7, I don't even bother listening all that much. Seems like that station hasn't had a real identity or direction for several years now...

2) Ryan Seacrest is much less annoying than Tesh

Well, can't really make a fair argument since I don't normally listen to Seacrest. However, on a knee-jerk basis, I'd agree.

3) What the **** is the name "Jo Mama Johnson" supposed to signify in a musical genre not know for celebratring androgeny?
As a previous poster mentioned, "Jomama" has been doing this for years. Before Star flipped to The Beat, if you remember. JoMama did the Quiet Storm show Sunday nights on FLZ.

By the way, true story. When I was growing up in the Fayetteville, NC area there was a radio station that I believe flipped from gospel to CHR in 1989 as WQSM was going from CHR to AC called Mix 96 (WMXF at the time, now 96.5 "The Drive"). Their main personality (who was REALLY full of himself might I add IMHO) was known as....

Joe Mama. I kid you not.

One more question I'd like pose while we're musing about radio. Why is it that BOTH FLZ and Wild 98.7 think that the word "Brain" is deemed offensive? Why do I ask? Here's a sample of lyrics from T.I.'s "Whatever You Like":

Shawty you da hottest love the way you drop it
Brain so good (good) swore you went to college

In that above sample, "brain" is edited out. Anyone know why? I'm just curious...

In all honesty, I think we can find something we don't like about any CHR in the country. FLZ sounds ok to me, not the greatest, but certainly not the worst. As for Taylor Swift, I don't see how any of her songs fit on a CHR. They belong on Mix. "Baby Got Back" is a good choice for an oldie. It's amazing how many kids dig this song who weren't even born when it was released. I agree with you about Sublime. They are one of those bands who never hit it big until long after they were finished. From my recollection, the only bonafide hit they had was "What I Got" but since then "Santeria" has suddenly gotten attention too.

"Brain" is street slang for oral s*x

"A BRAIN is a terrible thing to waste"

especially in a rented car on a business trip..but I have only heard about such things..from..uh, friends..yeah thiat's it..a pal of mine told me.

with all the cuts going on and the depletion of the brain trust, I guess you could say radio is a hard business.

I was at Bragg(ultimately worked at WRCQ and WMXF) when Dale O'Brian took over Mix 96 back then for Don Curtis. Dale had hired Joe Mama from 92 Jamz out of Greensboro. Mama was one of several very talented and entertaining personalities at Mix back then. I got out of the Army right after Dale had left Mix and was hired by Alan Hoover to take over mornings at Mix...by then, Joe Mama had moved on.
